Just had my 06 Golf GT TDI 140 serviced and changed to 1year/10k miles servicing from previous long-life servicing regime.
Now got almost a litre of redundant top-up oil - Comma Fully Synthetic 5w-30 long-life motor oil (VW 504 00/507 00, ACEA A3 B4 C3) - sitting on my garage shelf.
My "new" top-up oil which I got from the VW garage is Special Plus (SAE 5W-40, VW-Norm, 502 00/505 00/505 01, G 052 167 M2), which is all Double-Dutch to me.
Anyway, what should I do with my redundant long-life oil? Seems a waste putting it in the bin even though there's only a bit less than a litre left.

Since you are driving a TDI (Diesel), the VW oil specifications concerned are;

VW 505.01 (Time and Distance: T&D based oil)
VW 507.00 (Longlife servicing based oil)

AFAIK, you can still use the Longlife oil on a time and distance (1 Year,10K miles) based servicing regime. In fact it is probably encouraged, since the longlife oil (507.00) tends to be better oil than the T&D (505.01).

From my understanding;

On a T&D regime you may mix Longlife oil (507.00) with T&D oil (505.01) without concern
However for a Longlife regime you must try and stick to topping up with (507.00) based oil. In the event of 507.00 scarcity, the engine can be topped up with a maximum of 0.5 Litres of 505.01, but only once.

Hence, just because you switched to T&D based servicing doesn't mean you can't use the old 507.00 oil. Use it for top ups.

The lawn mover is on time and distance too. (I'm being ironic: our mower's electric.)
TR7 - thanks very much for the feedback: I'll use it to top up as you sugest. (I'm a baby-boomer who remembers food rationing, so I hate waste!.)
Things used to be so much simplier before all this long-life servicing lark.
If I'd known a week ago what I know now I'd have saved myself a few quid by not buying another litre of top up oil.
The Golf might not use any oil between services on the new T and D regimen (I hope), and if so I could end up with almost 2 litres of redundant top up oil!

HW,

You're welcome.

Longlife oil used on a T&D service regime would be ideal, since then you not compromising anything on oil quality, nor potential engine/turbo wear due to worn oil. I am sure that the surplus oil you purchased will come in useful for topping up, more so if you travel longer journeys.

Weekly oil checks or prior to long journeys should suffice. As per the user's manual, ensure that the car is neither overfilled nor underfilled, but preferably towards the upper end of the notch on the dipstick. Ideally check the oil when the engine is cold.
