Daughter's car. Woke up one morning with all 4 windows down and car not locked. Cause - water in relay tray (diagnosed later) and door lock paddle broken.
Replaced paddle and lock cylinder and door lock. Central locking re-activated. Windows only closing on key. Replaced original lock, windows still closing on key - and central locking OK. Returned new lock - not cause of problem. Having diagonosed missing gromet on bonnet release cable - cause of water damage, garage replaced relay tray and repaired broken wire on driver's door. Windows didn't function on switches - only on locking by key but would drop down. On garage advise replaced drivers door window motor with a replacement from the rear offside Vento and all seemed OK. Have used car for 2 days - windows opening and closing OK on swithes and on key. This morning - shock horror and dismay! Front passenger window down and rear offside window down. All windows close on the key. As key is removed, front passenger window and offside rear window creep down with a downward indexing motion. Cannot raise either on respective door switches. Can hear a ticking inside door panel. Have disconnected battery.

??? Could 3 motors go down within 2 days or is there something very elementary that I have overlooked. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif

Hi Thanks for joining the site:)

I suppose if water has got inside the relay, then is could cause a short and damage the window motors....unusual, but possible

Many thanks Stuart for info. After leaving battery disconnected overnight - the next day, yesterday connected up - and offending windows went up on the console button and door switch. Drove car all day without problem. Left outside overnight - windows stayed up. Drove car this morning still OK. Discussed problem with local VAG garage who fitted relay tray and they are unable to provide explanation. Will update should anything interesting (frustrating) develop.

After 6 days of problem free operation - nearside front and off side rear have dropped down. Omitted to mention in original message that the near side rear has not been functioning - stays permenantly up. Inoperable from console, door switch or from door look key operation.

Problem sorted. Offside rear window motor was faulty. Disconnected with window in the up position and no further problems.

Waiting to pick up replacement motor at the right price. Main dealers are quite expensive. As it is, this window does not have to be functioning. All other 3 windows work fine.

To isolate a window motor it is quite simple just unplug the cable by slide releasing mechanism on cable end. One of the nicests electrical connectors I have come across.

Good Luck!
