Golf MK3 1.6 GL Gearbox Problem HELP!!!!!

ive got a golf mk3 1.6 GL, sometimes when i start my car it doesnt go into gear. on the auto golf u have to press the break and then press the button on the gear stick but it button wont go in. im really stuck as i can not drive my car anywhere pppllllzzzzz help me.

Do the brake lights work? I think it probably uses the brake light switch on the brake pedal to tell the gearbox that the brake is on. If it goes out of adjustment the gearbox doesnt realise you've got the brake on - and the brake lights dont work. If its that then its a 5minute adjustment!
