View Full Version : What about Your REAL fuel consumption?

Hi
First diesel car which I drove was Opel Ascona 1.6 CY 1984. Its average consumption was among 7 and 8 liters per 100 km. Outside town was below 6 L/100km and in town was more then 8 L/100km. From 2000 I drove new VW Passat Variant 1.9 TDI PD (B5 115 hp) and consumption in town was around 9 L/100 km it was impossible to go under 8 L/100 km. I am aware that in town I was making no more then 5 km and it was full with stop and go. Outside town it was difficult to go under 5.5 L/100 km, and normal consuption was 6 to 7 L/100 km.
Two months ago I bought Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI CY 2004 (B6 130hp) and as per board computer the consumption is like this:

Town: min 7 L/100 km (mostly I pay attention and done more then 20km)
max 10.9 L/100 km (if I do not care and with planty start and stop)

Outside: min 4.5 L/100 km (driving with care and without high hills)
max 7 L/100 km (driving like I stole it and pying att on police http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Anyhow I am satisfy with my consumption but I read in lots of forums that people are doing even better or unreacheable (for me) consumption.
I realy take care about car, maintenance, tyres etc.

What about Your REAL fuel consumption?

This is similar to factory declaration. It is realy good. I knows that everybody has a different style of driving and my is obviosly heavy. My wife knows to get better consumption than I do.

This is the reason I am so chuffed with my new (but Mk5) Golf with the 1.4 122PS petrol engine with DSG gearbox.

On menu 2 overall consumption in the 2800 miles since I have had it , average 49.1 mpg and still running in and improving . I can`t believe it . Motoring is a mix of town and A roads, no motorways.

Brimmed my tank after filling up last time and took note of the volume pumped in. Bear in mind this is an 8 1/2 yo Passat with 223k on the clock with the 115bhp diesel.

BTW the refuel light comes on with 10l left in the tank, as it came on as I was entering the petrol station.

623.6 miles, 49.89l added to tank - 56.82 mpg. :biglaugh:

Driving is usually a mix of A roads and motorway at a steady 75 - 80 mph.

I get 46 mpg combined over a use of a full tank, a good mix of round town and short motorway bursts.

It very rarely does more than 15 miles on the motorway in one go, so for a big car I'm rather pleased. Especially because its fast at the same time.

see 65mpg every day on my 30 mile drive from work, mix of town, a road, village, a road, village, a road, town, then town again. not many uphills till near home, steady traffic, occasional overtaking.

best ive seen which i did have a photo for was 79.9, best i can give proof of is attached. thats from an afn engined passat which is chipped to within an inch of its life and a fresh head gasket and vw service parts fitted by vw specialist, fuel filter changed every 6 months as part of 10k service. chip gives 143hp, rolling road produced 158hp an 255lb/ft torque

im very happy with it :beerchug:

350 miles to a tank in the bad boy Golf. 50ltr tank too.
Hurts my wallet.

I think that equates to roughly 35mpg? not bad for a 21yr old bus.
Although, that figure is reducing due to a hole in the exhaust and blue smoke... (thread in Golf MkII section :1zhelp:)

Yeah the juice thing is an issue for alot of people.

The 7s required a rebuild usually around 75k miles. The 8 has a decent reputation and are as cheap as chips to buy these days.

They are prone to flooding but thats the main concern with them

It's look like that old type of 1.9 tdi with 90 and 110 hp are better in consumption than PD engines. I did not try to drive them but I was driven and I remember that skoda octavia 1.9 tdi with 110hp had 6.6L/100km (42.8 MPG) in town. These days I was trying to get better consumption in town with my Audi and average was around 9 L/100km (32 MPG).

39mpg average from 2002 A4 2.5Tdi Avant, mostly cross country/urban cruising on Mway/dual carriageways at 80 to 90mph. Tank range 500 -550 miles before low fuel alarm comes up. do have roof bars though, that adds about 2 mpg. Towing a 1250kg caravan 28mpg.

1998 Audi A4 B5 110 Bhp, 1.9 TDi.

53.4mpg most recent tank, 48.8mpg running total (over 20,000miles).

Every drop of fuel in is recorded (sad, I know!!!)

LTA is a lot lower than it should be as if there's been a fault with the car it adversely affects the MPG. These days I nearly always get 50+mpg out of it.

Recently bought an SE 130 Auto, my very gentle daily 5 mile trundle in traffic in London seems to give between 29 and 32 mpg so far.
It strikes me though that the gearbox, although supposedly able to adapt to driving style, doesn't make best use of the torque available when driven gently. If I trundle along at 25/28 mph along a flat/straight road it sticks in 3rd gear at say 1500/1600 rpm? It could easily be in 4th and still pull easily. And putting it into the Tiptronic still won't allow you to manually move it to 4th?

Can the gearbox ECU be remapped easily?

Being the 100 it will have to rev higher to keep you going at the speed you want.

My 130 gathers speed faster and then I can sit at that speed. The smaller acceleration distance increases the fuel economy.

You could get in touch with one of the forum sponsors, they can remap the PD100 to around 130 I believe. That could help your fuel economy.

Also, if the car is in need of a service it will return lower mpg...

Missus has a 110Bhp (AVG- engine code) passat tdi estate on a x plate and if i drive it like miss Daisy i get over 80Mpg but never less than 45Mpg in town. Its chiped too and a full tank lasts 600 town to 800 miles motorway. The pd engine cannot match the old VE engine with regards fuel consumption + the VE are much simpler and much more reliable !

70 mile daily commute, 90% free moving dual carriage way.
54 MPG, 70l tank = Range of ~800 miles between fillups.
Driven very carefully these figures rise but that makes for a very boring journey.

Reminds me of a friend that chased a Merc along an autobahn. The driver of the Merc had stuck two fingers up at him as he left a filling station. He had to get to speeds in excess of 140 mph before he overtook the Merc. He was driving a Jag XK something or other, and decided to stay ahead of the other driver come hell or high water. He was dissappointed that the Merc gave up the chase after about half an hour when it pulled into a service station. He had to give up himself a few minute after that when the low fuel chime started to sound. He had used 20 gallons of petrol doing 100 miles.

Beware! They do have speed cameras in France, They also Police with radar everywhere. But one of the easiest way to get caugh is the time taken between toll booths. If you cover a known distance between getting your ticket and presenting it to pay under a set time you can be sure of getting a tug from Mr Plod ( This set time can change due to weather conditions )

Passat b5.5 2004 1.9 tdi PD Highline

I am doing about > 80 000 km a year so i have pretty good sample for consumption calculation:

On highway it is avg 5.6 l per 100 km and 6.5 in city roads.

Golden gear shifting zones are no lower than 2000 rpm and upper 2750 for highway and within cities is 2000 rpm for lower and 2500 for upper. The results are based on these driving habits...:beerchug:

VW Bora TDI 130, remapped to 170bhp: 47.5mpg (Combination of motorway, city and B roads). Finding it very hard to acheive 50mpg according to the trip computer. Even a long run at 70mph will only just get to 50-51mpg.

BMW Z4 3.0i: 36.7mpg not bad for a 3.0 straight 6.... but cannot compete with the punchiness of the TDI ;)

my old beemer 325i did about 13mpg, was hurrendous on fuel, was so glad to get to astronomical levels with the passat, currently on 300 miles from 30 quid of excellium at 1.10 a litre, got just under 1/4 tank left.

on a run i get stupid amounts of mpg, makes me laugh sometimes as i hit 70mpg average time and time again on the motorway, i dont tank it down the fast lane, usually stick to around 70mph, never lower unless average speed zones on m6 etc the 56mph rule wouldnt work on my passat cos the revs would be out the max torque and would be working harder to maintain speed.

when the 1.8 20v non turbo was running (in drive misfiring now :( )
the max i had was 46mpg doing 50mph for about 140miles,very boring. used to get 40mpg on the motorway at 80ish but never really get more than 29 city driving, my average (not much motorway) is 32mpg.
so shuda bought a turbo cus no difference :(
