View Full Version : How to refurb your own alloys

The topic - How to refurb your own alloys cheaply back to as new condition.
Why? - Damn cat run out in front of me and I had to swerve clipping a kerb.....on hindsight, maybe I shoulda took it out!
Visited Kwik fit this am who took my newly acquired spare out and swapped the tyres and fitted for me leaving the damaged wheel off the tyre.

Now onto the how to -

Firstly, for those of us owning Audis, Bm's or Vw's you really have to buy Wurth paint. This is what the manufacturer uses from new and is a perfect match

Products used

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/productsused-1.jpg

First thing is to sand down the damaged area as much as possible as shown

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/damageshownsandeddown.jpg

Once the rim has been sanded down, fill the damage with filler and allow to harden

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/damageshownwithfiller2.jpg

Sand again until a smooth level surface that matches the original is obtained and then add primer
As it was a spot repair I masked off the unaffected areas

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/primer.jpg

First coat of paint - good match too;)

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/firstcoatofpaint.jpg

Second coat of paint + lacquer

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/secondcoatofpaintlacquer.jpg

Finished rim

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/finishedrim.jpg

The whole process took around 3 hours from start to finish and will look even better left overnight:Blush:
I'm really pleased with it and it'll be going back into my boot as my spare.

Comments welcome

Thanks

Great guide, well done! Is the paint easy to get hold of (i.e. motor factors) or is it more specialised?

JimC64

Thanks Benjie, when I took the wheel to Kwik fit the next day to get the tyre fitted they couldn't believe the quality of the repair and asked how much it had cost? When I told them I had done it myself they examined the rim much more closely to try and find the repair:biglaugh::biglaugh:
The absolute must is fill n sand, fill again if necessary and then sand sand sand until a smooth finish is obtained for the absolute best results.

As for the paint....the Wurth stuff is a MUST.....I tried to do a set of wheels for the Jag with some Halfords stuff and had to re do them in the end.

You can buy the paint from

Good job!

How tough is the repair? ie, how will it stand up to the boys at the tyre place levering the tyre onto it?

JimC64
08-04-2009, 09:41 AM
Hi Nick, thanks for that.
I'd say it was pretty tough and yes probably tough enough to withstand that kinda treatment. I'd probably keep an eye on when they were doing they're thing though to make sure they use their lever on another part of the wheel if to be as safe as possible. Sounds like good advice but not sumthin I did:( although everything was fine:D
Come to think of it .....I never had any problems with the alloys I did for the Jag some time ago ( 2 sets ) both with little nicks n scratches pretty much all round the rim ( the wifes car - not mine!! ) and never even gave that a thought when they replaced the tyres.
Good question though Nick

Ooh, bloody hell, calm down! I only asked! To be honest though, I will probably have a go, but in the summer holidays (I'm a teacher).
Mind you, I'm not very good with detailing, but I think anything will be better than the way they look now!

Thanks for the info though!

Lol.....ok Benjie
why not see if you can find an old alloy from an old car / scrapyard or whatever and have a go and see what kind of results you can achieve? You'll be amazed and also good practice.
If I can be of any help please feel free to pm me or mail me at any time

Cheers

OK, thanks for that, I appreciate it. I might just practice on my spare and see how it goes. I may not take the tyres off though as my parts that need fixing are well away from the edge - and caused by the previous owner I might add!

Benjie....exactly what I did on my Jag wheels. Just make sure to use plenty of newspaper n masking tape to tape off the tyre :beerchug:

Hi Nigel, see codes etc as requested

08932101 - rust stop primer wnite/grey
0893351930 - lacquer spray special transparent
0893351900 - lacquer spray special wheel silver

Hope that helps Nigel.....if there's anything else you need please feel free to either pm me or email me anytime.

I'm kinda torn whether or not to do the wheels on my wifes Passat....The car looks great but from the wheels could do with a little refurb. Problem is I know from past experience I'll do it and she'll curb them in a week or month or two:(

Lookin forward to the write up and pics Nigel:beerchug:

sorry to be a bit thick but are the codes you quoted suitable for all VW alloys - my Golf Mk5 has 15" Misano wheels which are in pretty good nick but the odd mark which could do with touching up - I also have a Toyota Auris whose alloys have a few minorish marks - would i have to get seperate paint/spray & lacquer or could i use the same for both vehicles

Hi,

I understand that this process has been done with the wheel removed but can it be done with the tyre on the wheel and the wheel still on the car providing everything is masked up?

I just need to repair a few chips but dont really want to go the full length.

Also is there a reference for the wurth paint for a 2004 golf gti (mk v)

Thanks for your help

Richard

doobs - sorry, the short answer is I don't know for sure. All I know is mine was a perfect match.
If you're gonna do all the chips n nicks on all the wheels why not go the whole hog and do the full wheel? If its only a few scrapes n scratches here n there the rest would only need a very light sanding to provide a key for the primer.
Certainly make sense to do the Toyota as well with the same paint...that way any further problems on either car and you're good to go.:approve:

Richard - In short, yes, you can do the repair with the tyre still on the wheel as I did on my Jag x type a year or so ago. Take the wheel off the car first / or leave it on, whatever your preference....BUT.....make sure you mask very well to avoid overspray.
Unsure about the paint code for VW Golf GTI.

Top tip though.....you either have / or buy an old alloy .....you'll get one for a few £ and practice on it. It'll let you make any mistakes on a rim that doesn't matter, you can check colour match too, and you get to perfect your technique

All the best guys

Hi i am sure you have probably received numerous amounts on Post's on this

But just looking at your thread i have few questions if you dont mind ?

Basically the products you got

1.) The oakey sanding sponge you have is fine/medium did you need any other grits or was that grit fine because some DIY's I have seen work with different grits at different stages

2.) What Body filler brand is that

3). Lastly the bit the confuses me the most the Wurth Paint I see the lacquers both say lacquer special spray

But one says something like "felgen silber" and the other "klarlack nonchclanz"

Is one lacquer the actual SILVER spray and the other is the lacquer you used as the finishing lacquer after your second coat of paint, which is a polish thing ?

Sorry for the ridiculous questions as i am not that clued up on the whole procedure

Look forward to your reply

Best Regards

P.S the basic jist of it

>Sand
>Add Filler
>Sand Again
>Add Primer
>First Coat of Paint
>Second Coat of Paint
>Finalise with Lacquer

Hey X2, sorry just seen your post.
I actually had some medium sandpaper for the worst bits / once filler applied, med fine sanding sponge and fine sponge not shown.....any brand will do.
Sorry, can't remember the filler but any metal filler for that purpose will do the job. If in doubt just ask at your local DIY store and I'm sure they'll recommend one for you.
I see your point about the Wurth spray cans as they both do say similar, however you did notice the difference. The felgen silber is the silver alloy paint and the klarlack nonhclanz is the lacquer - amazing stuff it really is.

I did a refurb once with some cheapo Halfords stuff and it was a nightmare from start to finish - you really do only get what you pay for here.

Top tip is - sand, sand, sand and then sand again!

I've just done a partial refurb of one of my wheels after a blowout on the M74 heading south. Hit a piece of 2" x 4" length that someone had carelessly dropped on the carriageway and BAM.....blowout at 80mph.
I was impressed by the way the car handled as it went down reallll quick.

After assesing the damage ( sorry no pics ) the impact had caused a rip in the alloy causing a real sharp edge that immediately tore out the tyre sidewall.
My local Kwik Fit friend removed the tyre for free and inspected the damage - quite nasty were his words!
I refurbed over 2 days.
Cleaned the wheel thoroughly
sanded down damaged area
filled damaged area then sanded down
filled again and re sanded
cleaned the whole wheel again and masked off damaged area
2 coats of grey primer and a very light sanding
3 coats of silver alloy paint ( WURTH ) with a light sanding again followed by a light T cut to help the finish and blend in the work.
3 coats of lacquer again with a very light T cut to finish off and blend in to the original paint.:approve:

Took it back to my Kwik Fit friend and he said - Fantastic job, who did that for you? As he was trying to locate the repair
Told him I did it over 2 days and he was gobsmacked.....:biglaugh:

The trick was that the WURTH paint blended beautifully aided by careful prep and lots & lots of sanding.
Put the tyre back on the wheel ( Conti contact sport 2 ) I was quoted mostly around £175 - £190 for this tyre - he did it for £130:approve:

Back on the car and all is good with the world - even though I'm £130 lighter:(

Will your 17" TT Trapeze alloys fit a 2003 Passat Wagon? I am looking to buy some from a guy and wanted to be sure the offset will work. Any ideas?

Really good guide. Just going back to the paint, do Wurth do different shades or is it a case that they manufacture one shade that suits VAG?

Just kerbed my rear in this arctic weather that were having and want to sort it out.

Not sure what 'design' my alloys are (anyone know their name?) but picture attached - Anyone know if the Wurth paint would be a good match for these?

Cheers.

I'm not 100% sure is the honest answer. The only thing I can say is that they look identical to my alloys in colour and mine was a perfect match :beerchug:

Dredgey ,your alloys are 9 spoke RS4, some may refer to them as ' ur' rs4 the 'ur' simply meaning 'original', as these differ in style to the rs4 rims on b7 rs4's

An old post about to be given some life.

I recently did a refurb job on a set of alloys and I'm with Jim, really worth spending some time on. Unfortunately I just did it off my own back without reading any guides online so I used Simmonz paint which I'm sure wasn't the best paint to use, if I ever do it again I'll be looking out for the Wurth stuff.

Also take the time to fill twice, something I learned from doing it as the chances are there is going to be parts that need filled.

Excellent guide though Jim, thanks.

Tempted to try this on my le mans RS4 alloys but im wondering if it will blend well. And I also need to do all four corners due to poor driving by the wife but unsure how I can remove the tyre to get it on/off as I dont have facilities to remove tyres at home. I saw portable refurb services that just push the tyre back onto the bead so the alloy is exposed. Is that possible to do myself as I have an electric pump i just have no way of removing / replacing tyres.

SuperCharger28

I want to do this to my RS4 rims but I don't have a way to remove and put the tyre back on the rim. Can I remove the rim from the car on my drive and deflate the tyre and push it back and tape round to do the repair or must the tyre be removed as I need to do this to all four.

Really want to give this a go.

Do you know if the sprays you used will look good with RS4 rims?

I know this is a year old, but it'll be difficult/ impossible to push the tyre down. Once the bead has popped on you'll struggle to get it off manually. I have seen people mask around the edge of the tyre though, but for best results you'd be better off buying some cheapo 16" wheels, removing the rs4 rims and getting tyres removed and doing it properly.

Hope this helps anyone else ;)

JimC64
18-03-2013, 01:47 PM
Hey there SC......Its not 100% necessary to remove the tyres. On one set I did I simply deflated the tyres and then masked them off with old newspaper so I could affect the repair.

It's simply a case of inflating them afterwards.

The sprays I used were by Wurth and extremely good quality, so no issues there.

Good luck

2-3 tins of each should suffice for the set, personally iirc I got 4 as i wanted to keep a spare for emergencies and touch ups if required in future
