I been playing with my golf tonite as its been running a bit crap, poor MPG and that, so tonite I changed the spark plugs back to the ones it had when i got it ages ago ( they were only in it for 6 months and it did good MPG)

while i was under the bonnet i thought i`d have a fiddle(with the car not myself)

Now my golfs a 1.8 single port injection, its got an ERNST sports rear silencer from GSF and a K&N panel airfilter. Well when changing the airfilter over ages ago i noticed this strange pipe inside the airbox, tonite while i was there i decided to see if it came out as it looks restrictive..

Now that pipe is inside the top of the airbox and connects to the pipe that connects to the fuel injection unit, what exactly does it do? is it vital to the running of the car? obviously when you fit an induction kit its done away with so i doubt its that vital, or is it to stop induction noise?

cheers for your help in advanced :)
