Hey guys.

I have a 2002 52 plate Beetle 1.6, standard spec. It does have high mileage, but I am only the second owner from new.

About 6 months ago the "engine check" light came on - I took it to my local VW repair guy (not a main dealer, but a VW specialist nonetheless). He did diagnostics and came up with a few options..

16556 - Bank 1 Fuel measuring system
18010 - Votage supply terminal 30
17831 - Bank 1 secondary air system
16485 - Air mass meter present

But, he said these were all old faults. Checking the car service history, I noticed a service bill for the light, which said there was no fault and diagnostics had been carried out. I have been (reliably?) informed that the light will come on intermittantly if the sensor is dirty etc, even if the petrol cap is not on tightly enough!

Anyway, the light does keep coming and going - is this a problem? Also, this morning, the EPC light has come on. Are the two related? As the MOT is due in May, I kind of want to know if there is anything I should get sorted out before then.

Any help any of you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :D

it doesnt mention a sensor ? 17831 could be the air pump itself or a split in the hose from it to the engine best way is to look at your fuel trims this will help if you have an air leak if you have that could affect the air mass meter ...check your trims first

Thanks for that - my local VW specialist (but not the main dealer!) has suggested the same, that any kind of air leak due to a cracked pipe or seal could cause the problem too. He is replacing a brake light switch aswell, so hopefully this should rectify it....
