when starting from cold their a large noise from this area is better to change the alternator and pulley together or just the pulley ,i been told that their is a bearing in the centre of the pulley that goes wrong, ps also on full lock

The alternator pulley or the tensioner could be making noise. Take the belt off and give them a spin. The alternator pulley should drive the alternator in one direction and spin freely in reverse. The tensioner should just spin freely, no noise.

As Martin says. And no, don't just change the whole alternator, change the pulley or tensioner as required only. The pulley is a common problem on TDIs, have changed it myself on my A6 and T5.
