rev counter misreading

Just put a new battery in my 98 polo 1.6 GL due to the old one being too flat to start the engine. The rev counter now reads 2500rpm when the engine is off and over reads upwards from there. is there any way to reset the rev counter??

Sorry to hijack your thread. This has also happened on my Lupo. Is this a common problem?

Any help is appreciated.

not sure if it's a common problem. I removed the unit, took the front off and manually pushed the needle back to zero - had no problems since!!
