New cars come with a standard 3yr mechanical waranty. Can this be extended for another 2yrs for piece of mind. If so, are they worth it? what are the costs? and who do you go to?

I took out an extended warranty with my last car and ended up selling the car before it took effect. In the end I lost over $600 (got a refund for $480).

My advice: wait until it's near the expiration of the standard warranty before buying anything extra. It's not worth the expense now since you only get the benefit 3+ years from now. Also, as I understand, VW will sell the extended warranty right up to the expiration of the standard warranty; so there's no need to rush now.

If you do more than 60,000 miles within the first 3 years then

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/warranty/extended/mileage-top-up

or else

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/warranty/extended/3-years-plus

Forget about

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/warranty/extended/less-3-years

Also worth reading about the terms & conditions

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/warranty/extended/terms

as you'll have to make sure your car has a full service history with VW dealer or else they might not honour the extended warranty, also any repair have to be done by authorised VW dealer etc...
