I am due a service and my neighbour is a Mechanic with his own garage and diagnostic equipment.

I was thinking of letting him service the car, but im not sure which service it needs.

It will be the 3rd service from new ('05 plate), does it still alternate minor, major or does the car decide what kind of service it requires?

Any help will be great.

The car only tells you when a service is required, not the type of service.

For longlife servicing the manual says the servicing should alternate between an interval and an interval inspection service. However, some service items such as the brake fluid and cam belt are time & distance dependent.

I find that my local VW dealer usually indicates the wrong (or sometimes even both) type of servicing has been performed in the service book which makes it hard to determine which type of service has actually been performed. I've also found that it's not always clear from the pricing either because of whether or not you managed to haggle a discount.
