how big can we go? please help

hi all, finally persuaded the missus 2 change her pug 4 a vw, at last she's agreed and gone for a 1.4 06 plate. Obviously I'm not gonna leave it at that lol just wondering what size wheels could go straight on without any arch mods. I thought we could get away with 18's but iv been told id struggle if they were too wide. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

What sort of VW is it? I have 18 inch on my bora, theyre 225 wide, the arches never rub, even on the worst of roads with a load in the back;). It is lowered too!

Sorry m8. Its a beetle, I tried 2 push her towards a golf but she wouldn't have none of it lol. I thought 18s would go straight on but could do with knowing how wide, its gonna b dropped on coilies aswel. How low did u manage 2 go wiv them wheels? Nice 1
