Reprogramming a new key

I have read all over the internet that its possible to buy a blank key from Ebay - and using a few easy steps / program the new key, so its usable

I have a 1997 Audi a4 1.9tdi

And Audi want to charge me £170.00 for a new key (A spare key) - and even if i was a rich man - that takes the ****

Any advice would be helpful :)

There are some posts on these forums but they don't really give me full confidence

your key will have a transponder thats linked to the immobiliser
yes you can buy blank keys, but you need a 4 digit security code in order to match the new key to the immob.
if you have the code (it would of been supplied on a tag when car was purchased new but often go missing) you will still need a full copy of vag-com to match keys

so better option would be to find a local auto-locksmith who will be able to do it for you
