A8 3.0 TDi that has been left running for an hour or so, has started to smoke - like a WWII destroyer when the captain orders "make smoke No.1"..........Is there any normality in this behaviour ?

It cleared itself after a couple of minutes and hasn't done it since.

SEEMS LIKE A FAULTY EGR VALVE - EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE. Cheap parts at Audi but takes time to fix. The upside is that you will get much better mpg, - I'm getting 15% more!!

I have a 2005 3.0 TDi Sport A8 that smokes if left idling for more than a few minutes... and even if moving in slow traffic. Could this be the EGR Vslve as well? I have been told that it could but I have also been told that this could be down to a worn turbo and or worn injectors. I need to narrow this down because I have had a Quote of £1900.00 for a new set of injectors (with an £800.00 cash back on return so without the return £2700.00!!) and about £1500.00 for a new Turbo. Aparantly EGR Valves are about £650.00. All these prices did not include fitting either !!

Mine does the same, I assumed it too was EGR related....I gave it a good blast (prob the wrong thing to do) and it now seems to have cleared it !

Do youmean that you removed it and cleaned it or just gave it a good blat up a motor way. If the latter then 2500 miles in France this summer might do the job but I'd rather not risk doing all that mileage with a car that isn't right....

A blast (70mph was plenty fast enough :D) for about 5 miles on an empty motorway cleared the smoke and I haven't seen a problem since...

It was just after I had a remap installed, so that could have been the main issue ?

I drive on motorways all the time and not just at 70 so I don't think that will fix it somehow...

Just a mo - you said it only did it once - did the smoke come out of the exhaust or from underneath the car?
