Hi can any one help me? I have just got a 1997 Audi A4 1.8T
and can not stop the front suspension from sqeaking. 2 mechanics have looked at it and both have sprayed all the bushes with lubricant, with out success. Any help would be apreciated.

P.S great site.

When they squeak they are ready to re-new,otherwise they WILL snap in half!!
They are aluminium so break in half,i know from past experiance!!! Also a few years ago a audi technician gave me this advice but i decided to use wd40 and stop the sueaking and 2 weeks after,......the bottom balljoints gave in , in the middle of a busy road! Thats when i used the AA to recover me home.

Yep, the suspension is knackered, dont worry though as its a common thing in most makes that after a reasonable amount of time your going to need some suspension work. Plenty of options out there though and will only cost you a few hundred pounds to sort out if you get basic aftermarket kit. Speak to a few local garages and ask them to quote on 4 new dampers & springs to be supplied & fitted, you wont need an Audi specialist or main dealer to do something like this. Other option if your handy with a spanner is to get yourself the Haynes manual & the suspension & do it yourself. If you do this though may I recommend you get it tracked immediately to makes sure everything is lined up right!!

Hi, i would have thought you have an issue with the aluminium suspension arms, not the shock absorbers. There are 10 link arms all in all including the anti roll bar drop links. Try febi arms, they are german made and have some good reviews on this site. Try www.vwspares.co.uk they are very helpfull. The top rear arm was modified around 1997 and incorporates a small rubber bump stop, you should fit these ones to any age a4 (they are actually cheaper than the ones without the bump stop!) Unless you are fairly competent with the spanners i would get a mechanic to do the job. I replaced all of mine, the only hard bits are removing the pinch bolt on the top two arms (This rusts in place) and removing the front lower ball joint from the knuckle assy, (needs a splitter with 26mm mouth). If you have gone this far, i would also seriously consider replacing both front wheel bearings as they can wear out before 120K.
