Squealing Fan belt
I recently had a problem with the fan belt of my 2002 A4 Avant 1.9TDI squealing when the steering was turned to full lock also there was a slight noise a bit like a waterpump when at tickover, sometimes a slight thumbing feeling through the steering when moving off on full lock.
I suspected the fan belt of have stretched and replaced it but the noise remained and the kickback through the steering also remained.
I bought a new tensioner for the fan belt which had a warning on the advice sheet which said to check the freewheel bearing on the alternator pulley so I made inquiries about these and bought an Audi one because they carry a 2 year warranty and cost £62 all in.
A special tool is required to hold the pulley in order to remove it, I bought a Sealey kit at £20 which made the job much easier
it took me almost an hour to remove the alternator replace the pulley and refit the alternator
I am glad to say that this cured the problems
