hi my step dad has recently purchased a a8 4.2tdi. has any one any experience on fitting a towbar to one of this and is it a simple procedure? or will he need to take it to audi to get one fitted?

Its fairly straightforward, but took me forever, the next one would be fairly quick! Summary is, remove all the trim from boot, remove back lights, remove rear bumper cover, remove bumper, remove exhaust heatshields, loosen and lower exhausts. Fit towbar. Fit electrics. Put everything back.

You will then need VCDS to code in the electrics. My dealer wanted about £1100 to fit a Westfalia unit with electrics, I did it for about £480.

The bar itself is a massive bit of heavy engineering, it weighs about 35 kilos, and fits right inside the frame of the car. Presumably it needs to spread the stress round the aluminium spaceframe very carefully
