Hi I have just bought an A3 1.9 tdi se 1999 rhd and I am going to fit my own cd player as the concert r/c is u/s, someone had been none too careful how they had taken it out before I got the car, all the radio facia is twisted and the electronics damaged.
What I need to know is what is the box with the big fan on it in the boot above the l/h side wheel arch, looking from the rear. I have read that some cars have an amp somewhere, I need to know so that I can get the correct harness adapter/fitting kit for my cd head unit, which is JVC by the way, I am not a newbie with car audio just Audi's, my golf was a bit simpler.
Any help would be great thanks

The box sounds like the sub-woofer, this is std on all A3s

The box in the boot is the siren for the alarm, we had problems with our alarm when we got our A3 (V Reg), and it turned out the siren was faulty which was causing the alarm to go off sporadically almost every hour at some points, all through the night.
If I were you I'd be careful with this box, you really don't want to get up every hour to turn off the alarm like we did!

Thanks folks, ha ha, now I've got two differing views of what the box is. I have been doing a little researching around, I noticed that above and forward of this box is a multipin plug, and having looked at some pictures of Audi cd changers I think that this plug is for that, which adds weight for the sub-woofer theory as the harness looks all as one.

Yes the multipin is for the CD multi-player but only Audi ones?
IIRC the subwoofer is on the right.
If the speakers have a Bose logo on them you'll find the Bose Amp. on the right.
Have a look at http://www.audiworld.com/tech/ some interesting articles there.

New to this forum, and not yet set up my details but just swapped my A4 for a newer A3 (02 1.8 T-sport) and want to use my multi changer from other car but can't seem to find the boot plug as mentioned in this thread.

Can someone please tell me exactly where I should be looking.

Thanks,

Nice forum btw

Hi

Sadly I think the prewiring for a CD changer was not standard on later A3s - I had the same probelm and opted to get an Ipod adaptor instead.
