I have an A3 Sportback 2.0 Sport - 54 plate and fitted Dunlop SP 9000 on my 225/45 x 17 wheels 10,000 miles ago. The drumming noise is now unbearable! Audi and an independent tyre supplier agree the problem is uneven wear on the back tyres. Front OK. Can anyone recommend the quietest tyre for this model and wheel size? Originals were Michellin.

I use Continental Sport Contact 2's all the time - superb wet weather grip and I find the noise levels acceptable. However, they do get noisy when near the wear limit.

Of course, these may not be the quietest! There are several review site sout there:

www.tyretest.com (http://www.tyretest.com)

www.which.co.uk (http://www.which.co.uk) (you have to register though)

I think autoexpress have an accessable review on their website.

Thanks. I knew about 'which' but not tyretest.com. Current research is pointing me towards Continental Sport Contact 3 or Michelin Primacy/Exalto.

Michelin Primacys are on my A6, they're very good for noise etc, but the sidewall doesn't stick out very much, so the wife kerbs the wheels far too easy.

Due to that, I changed and fitted Bridgestone Potenzas, which offer more protection to the rim, and seem to be the same in terms of grip and noise.

Have had intense road noise on my Golf Plus - especially at exactly 40kph!

Just had new tyres fitted (Goodyear Eagle NCT5) same as VW original, and noise has disappeared completely!!

How nice to have quiet motoring - but I did manage to get 38,000 miles from them.
