My 2000 X reg 2.0 New Beetle keeps bleeping at me and illuminating the ABS, ESP and Handbrake warning lights (The handbrake warning light flashes). The car seems to drive OK when these are on, a bit more skittish perhaps but ok, the only difference is if I try an emergency stop the rear brakes lock up!

Any ideas what the problem could be? I have Vagcom on order but would like some ideas in the meantime!

The fault only seems to occur when it is either very cold or wet out. If I turn the car off then back on the lights go out and everything sems to work OK until something sets it off again.

The car has only done 46k.

Could be an wheel sensor with a bad connection !

I was thinking (and hoping as it'll be a nice easy/cheap fix!) its that, will Vagcom tell me which sensor?

Right, I've Vagcom'd it now and these are the fault codes I'm getting:

On the ABS ECU: 65535 - Internal Control Module Memory Error
00-00 - -

On the Control module (I assume this is the speedo): 01316 - ABS Control Module 49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent

By the looks of these codes I'm guessing the ABS control module is getting water/moisture into it and messing it up?

Can anyone confirm what these codes mean?
