I've got a 1996 VW Corrado VR6, about 110k miles in good condition. Recently it has started not starting, I need to jump it off every time.

The battery has been tested (its under 4yr warrenty) and is ok. When I charge the battery and take it out of the car it holds it charge fine for 3 days. A friend said it could be the alternator leaking the power when it's in the circuit.

Does anyone have problems with their electrics or could point me in the right direction.

The alternator is an original vw part, but says 70w?? Looking at ebay the vr6 alternators seem to be 90 or 120w? Is this a possible fault?

Cheers,

Ian

to see if alternator is ok you will need a ammeter
with all lights/wipers on ignition on only this will give you ampage used figure
when car is running ampage replaced to battery should be more than used
if not put alternator on car
does car start ok when battery has been charged?

Hi mine is a 70w alternator and has not been changed so thats fine ,
while checking check actual voltage at the battery with every thing electrical switched on
you should get at least 12.5volts plus @ idle and this should increase with engine rpm
without the the power on the battery voltage should be around 14.4 volts @ idle that when most regulators kick in to prevent over charging.
