I have a 98' Passat 1.9 tdi 110 that has done 132k. It had the cambelt and waterpump etc done at 116k. The past week there is a squeak coming from the engine. I know it isnt anything like a wheel bearing because it does it when the car is idling.

The squeak is fairly quiet and comes and and goes off, it doesnt stay on as one continous noise.

I was wondering if anyone knew what this could be?

Depends where it's coming from. Could be an aux belt, or a bearing in one of the moving parts, or as simple as plastic rubbing together or your headlight vibrating against the wing!

Turn wheel left & right full-lock (or near to), first gear, and try to set off. If it squeaks more when you do that, it could be the alternator pulley (wild guess...).

Mate of mine had this. It was a nest of squirrels in the air filter box. :biglaugh:
