Hi Folks

Hoping someone can help with a problem I have with my beloved 1.8s Auto.

It's only done 45k, but now after about ten miles makes a horrible grinding noise from the transmission.

Auto box changes smoothly upto and after the noises start.

Seems OK off load, the noise is not related to a road speed component but rises and falls with throttle setting, you know what I mean, sort of clutch dying! Torque converter?

Regards

Mark

a good old Munn and Chapman car
sounds like gearbox failure
there used to be a good transmission specialist in High Wycombe but cant remember their name sorry
the gearbox you have use to leak the oils between diff and auto section due to a seal and this would cause the diff /pinion bearing to wear causing a whine under load but not when off accelerator
i know its not any help but i might of done the pdi on this car when it was new

Hi, your not wrong, it is a Munn & Chapman car thats now made it's way West Sussex.

Thanks for that info even though it could spell doom for the poor old 80, shame, its a lovely car in incredible condition.

Don't tell the wife but will probably hide it at the back of the barn until a diff/box turns up.

Once again thanks for your input.

Do you think it's worth converting to manual?

Cheers

Hello.
My old "E" reg 80s had the very same fault and eventually lost all drive but mine was 187,000 miles, cracking old car though and before the box went duff the only fault other than servicing was a set of valve seals.
I would keep it & look for a box or sell it to me for a nominal sum :D
Good luck.

Thanks for all the encouragement chaps, the 80 is now tucked away in the barn and I'm starting to hunt round for a solution.

Unfortunately there's about 12 other semi classic cars including Midgets, Morgans, Mk1 Minis, Renault 4s, Land Rovers ETC, so do have my work cut out.

Having said which, my son has just appeared reporting noise from CV on his MK2 Golf GTI, I'm doomed.

My village garage has less cars to look after!

All my wife says is "why don't you get an Audi A2 like mine, it never goes wrong". Thanks love.

Thanks again chaps, will keep you posted.

Cheers

Mark
