I have been the proud owner of a beautiful VW Passat 2.5L V6 TDI for the sum total of about a month. Unfortunately my girlfriend (in her infinite wisdom) decided that it would be fine to pull onto oncoming traffic at an undisclosed location somewhere in the east end of london. :zx11: I absolutely LOVED that car, only 66k on the clock, inperfect condition, 163 bhp, loads of extras. It took me about 2 months to find it.

I am wondering if any of you have any recommendations as to a suitable replacement with equivalent welly and load capacity- audi a6 or new model passat sport for example. How do the new passat shape up against the old ones and is the a6 avant comparable? All recommendations considered. Please help.

I'm quite glad my girlfriend refuses to drive my A4 now- even though she's insured on it.

I'm lucky, my girlfriend is an environmentalist... so she refuses to learn to drive!

I have a budget of around 8 - 9k. Are the new passats ok? Nice idea about the skoda.

At work we've just sold an A4 Avant that we had as a pool car.

It was a 55 plate S-Line with pretty much all the extras and went nicely - not sure how it would compare to a 2.5 V6 having not driven one.

We got just under £6500 for is as it had done 89000 miles.

I guess it all depends on what age/mileage etc you're willing to take.

The A4 is a little too small for our needs (family and kitesurfing requiring lots of space). The a6 is more the size we are after.

To the original poster, I'd go for the A6 Final Edition Avant. Get a low mileage one, possibly a 2.5TDI again, and you'll still have £1,000 to £1,500 to mod it afterwards. :D

Drive just like the Passat, and has the same problems, but once you've driven the A6 you know why that's an Audi and not a VW.

The Passat 3C is a lovely car but reliability is an issue.

Environmentalist girl friend! Trade her in. Don’t worry; she will come to her senses one day when the world wakes up to the fact that this Co2 thing is a load of ****!

My wife was a veggie burger when I first started going out with her, the smell of bacon sandwiches wafting upstairs on a Sunday morning soon sorted that out! No way I was marrying a woman who didn’t eat meat! :naughty:

Not to de-rail the thread, but oddly despite being an environmentalist she's still happy for me to drive her everywhere.

And yes, she's a vegetarian too...

i remember the 2cv being adopted by many 'greens' as the car to have etc etc, not only did they polute more than most cars on the road, they were rubbish on fuel too!!! ha ha!!

passats sure can eat a load of luggage, got 4 adults, 1 child and all the camping stuff for a weekend away and no passenger had anything on their laps or under their feet etc, i remember when my mrs drove my car back from tenby for a job interview, i was scared stiff she was going to crash it :aargh4: she got back and i had a look at the trip meter with a fine tooth comb and realised not only had she done better on fuel, she'd only been 2 hours slower on the way back to tenby :biglaugh: from shrewsbury

Yes, many, which is why I proposed to her in January!

She cooks meat amazingly well for someone who gave up eating it when she was 12!

And she's seriously hot!

By the way, I'd go for the Passat estate again - good balance of size, comfort, and prestige.

Great banter (kinda helpful) best bit of advice was get an a6 final edition avant.

Does anybody have an opinion about the new passats vs the old ones?

Any more recommendations would be welcomed.

New Passat’s are lovely cars but slightly suspect reliability, the old ones were very good cars.

We run 3 Passat 2.0 TDI's here and they're all great.

Never had any reliability problems with them. :approve:

My girlfriend crashed my dads car a couple months ago in the snow, despite it being 4x4, and since she werent insured I had to take the blame for it... what a bitch.

Anyway Id have to go along with whoever said Skoda Superb. Even thought personally Id get an Octavia VRs if I could afford it , hatchback or estate, wouldnt mind either.

Definitely think they are better cars than the passat though and although that is arguable Skoda is defiintley better value for money; FACT.

And working on VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda on a daily basis I can tell you that Skoda build quality is far better than the other three. I love my VRS but it isn’t the same type of car as the Passat/Superb. One of my customers brought in a lovely catch for an oil change today, a 2004 Passat V6 4 Motion, leather, nav, parking etc and very low mileage, £5K!

The Superb does not come as an estate tho does it. I really need the load lugging capabilities. What about the new audi a6?

Good point. The new A6 Avant is a fantastic car; I think they are probably my personal favourite (attainable) car in the current VAG group range. The TDI 3.0 quattro is a stunning machine.
