Hello All,

What is your typical MPG on your golf 1.9 TDI in real world driving and how many miles do you get from a full tank?

Im still trying to decide between a 1.9 TDI or a 2.0 GT TDI

Thanks

on a standard 1.9TDi (not BLUEMOTION) anything from 55 to 70 mpg. More fuel efficient than the 1.4 TDi Polos.

All info taken from onboard computer display.
Around town 45MPG - difficult to get below 38 MPG
Regular 40-miles M6 motorway run at 67 MPH(2200 RPM) returns between 57 & 61 MPG dependant on weather conditions
Average mixed driving in the order of 51MPG.

i do alot of "country side" driving as its what im near with towns and dual carriageways, with all them taken into account i average between 45-50 mpg.

all these people saying 70+ mpg, how long does it take you to get work?

also just wondered what the average miles you get out of a full tank?

cheers :biglaugh:

07 Plate 1.9TDI.

Usually getting about 48 to 53 mpg, Motorways at 80mph
slightly aggressive driving style on country roads

usually get around 550miles on a Full tank, full as is right to the top.

got a 2.0 litre gt tdi 140bhp- av aout 46-47mpg per tank on jpurney to/from work, mainly urban roads + stretch of dual carriageway- though I do have 18" alloys which will make a slight difference to rolling resistance...

In ours I tend to get around 44mpg on a average "faster" drive..

if i drive it as soft as possible... like i did the other week, 150 miles round trip I got 59mpg, and that was sat at the speed limit etc.. :aargh4:

I have got a 150 mile trip in the morning todo..

I will post some photos of the DIS to show what i get..

ps.. its a 1.9TDI SE 105 -

Just filled up my 1.9 Tdi for the first time since getting it 2 weeks ago. It's a 2004 54 plate with 40000 miles on the clock. I put a full tank in on the day I got it and have covered 410 miles since. The tank was just down below 3/4 and in cost £43 to fill. Works out at 43mpg which I was a bit disapointed with to be honest. Having said that it has been all town driving and short journeys with no longer runs. I must admit I have been giving it some lead boot as well as I have never owned a diesel and I love that grunt between 3000-4000rpm.

I did think about getting the 2.0GT. The extra cost (about another £1k) and insurance group 13 as apposed to group 6 put me off as well. Also I wanted the cruise control on the SE. I bet that 2.0 goes like stink though!

Just had a few quotes for insurance on both models and the 2.0 is about twice the cost of a 1.9, so im swaying towards a 1.9. I think anything above 50mpg combined would be fine with me.:biglaugh:

Traveller, I don't think you would regret going for the 1.9

I didn't drive a 2.0 but for me the 1.9 is plenty powerful enough. I took mine out on the motorway the other day and it's great from 50-70 when passing lorries and such. The cruise control on the SE is easy to use and I'm hoping my combined mpg will be better this time round.

On a side note, has anyone noticed if switching the air con off has improved their economy? I didn't realise at first that it was switched on all the time by default. If you don't want it then you have to turn it off manually.

The other day i did a 119 mile round trip..

Going there i did not hang around :D and got 49mpg...

On the way home i was following a mate (just picked a car up which had some damage to it so we took it easy) and got a decent figure on the return route..

Pictures below.. bad quality.. but gives you an idea.. its a Mk5 Golf .. 1.9TDI

Possibly a stupid question here but....

My 1.9 TDI SE does not show the mpg in the digital display. Is there anything I need to press in order to show this or does it just not have this feature?

You press the button on the end of the wiper arm.. up or down..

if you dont have button you dont have it..

However.. i though all SE had it..

Do you have cruise control also??

Rick

TDI Chris
24-03-2009, 04:16 PM
No button for me.

I do have the cruise control though which is the button on the indicator stalk.

I have to work out my mpg the old fashioned way. Divide the number of miles I have done by the number of gallons to fill up. Just filled up again and did slightly better. 44mpg!

I just don't know how people are getting over 50mpg from this engine. Maybe that computer is telling porkies?

Got my Golf Match 1.9TDI in early January and have now covered 3,200 miles of Norfolk and Suffolk roads. The engine is loosening up nicely and the computer tells me I've averaged 50.9mpg overall.

I am actually doing better than that; I keep accurate refuelling records and the car has averaged 51.58mpg overall since new but over the last 1200 miles it is averaging better than 52mpg and it should continue to improve yet. I'm hoping to better 53mpg as an average once the engine has got more miles on it.

All the best

I don't completely trust the onboard computer so I do the painful calculation after each fill up.

I'm getting 48 (give or take a decimal point) overall. I reckon this is pretty good given that I don't do that many long journeys and I live in a hilly area.

The one long trip I did do, I got over 55 mpg.

I have an 04 1.9 TDi SE MkV Golf,
Two years ago I used to get about 500 miles to the tank full.
Then I invented my NONE EcoDriving warning device now I get 600 and often 620 even 640 miles to the tanks full... I get more MPG around town now than I do on 70 MPH A Road Mway trip...

It's not the car its how you drive it.. It takes a lot of fuel to accelerate a mass so back off the loud peddle and look ahead a lot more.

Did you know that the LEM (lunar excursion module).. The little tin can they used to pop two men on the moon weighed less than the weight of a smart car and in took over 3,000 TONS of fuel just to accelerate it up to speed, the first stage engines alone burning about 16 tons of fuel per second... All that just to get it up to speed as it a free ride across space.

Hope that helps IMK

the most i ever get out of a standard 1.9tdi is 45mpg with misxed contryside and motorway driving. on long motorway trips i have got 50mpg. on average i get 490-500 per tank.

One thing that makes a difference is the type of fuel I've found using the higher grade of diesel gives more out a tank then the standard stuff.

Got a 54 plate 1.9, don't have the MPG computer display so I don't know my mpg but I always fill to the top and run it to empty.....my best is 700 miles for 54lts of use but 650 miles is about average.
I must say that I do drive carefully and can be seen on the motorway doing 60 MPH like 'old nanny noblett'.

can highly recommend the 1.9 if its economy/stytle (with a bit of poke for the odd overtake) that you are after.

You 1.9 ers are lucky. My 2.0 has only just broken into 40mpg average, due to the last 2 weeks being a bit warmer. Hills absolutely murder economy though. A hill near my house can take the mpg from 47 down to 35mpg within 1 mile. Hardly seems affected by how much throttle is used either!

Yes I live in North Wales and very hilly around here, the trick is not to accelerate up hill!. Get up to speed on the flat or even better still get up to speed going down a slope then cruise up the hill at a constant speed.

GarJE
27-03-2009, 11:18 PM
One major problem though. At the bottom of the hills lies a roundabout, so have no option to accelerate up the hill (which is also a 60mph zone).

Petrol for me next. Haven't been overly impressed with diesel economy, especially when it comes to utilising the quoted power output of the engine.

Diesels seem to give great economy as long as

a: The road is a 50/60mph zone
b: The road is flat
c. You don't have to stop too much
d: Ambient air temperature is >10C
e: You drive over 10 miles to work each day.

I can't tick any of these. As a result I regularly see 33mpg average (with aircon off and no VCDS codes).

Well, I was joking really about the way I drive the car. I do try to be as economical as possible most of the time.

So far the Golf 1.9tdi does about 5mpg more than my 1.6 petrol Focus. Same kind of driving under the same conditions. Given the extra cost of buying the car and the extra cost of diesel I don't think I will save any money. It's not all about economy though. I certainly prefer the diesel to drive although you do have to put up with the noise.

I would like to know how to get 700 miles on one tank though. My fuel warning light came on after 430 mles last week. I'm no speed freak either.

I guess we are all different as are our cars. After my Bora, I had a 1.4 Honda Civic - very underpowered and I got an overall 38.5 mpg. I got shut after only 18 months. Driving up hills was a nightmare.

In exactly the same driving condition, low annual mileage, mixed driving in a hilly area, the Golf is returning 48.1.

Nearly 10 mpg better which more than recoups the price premium of diesel over petrol.

I think what constitues hilly differs for people. The hill i live on is a 23% gradient. That's 1 in 4! Much more like that and steeper around my way too.

peteo
28-03-2009, 12:32 PM
Agreed about the hills. My car tends to end up doing some hill climbing from cold and shortish journeys though I do try to keep these to an absolute minimum.

I was looking at some old mpg figures on my 1999 Bora. When I was still driving 40 miles per day round trip to work, it was doing comfortably over 53 mpg which is/was the claimed mpg figure in the handbook.

I try to drive reasonably cautiously now. Advancing years slow you down a bit too but I would be very disappointed with anything under 45.

For me, economy apart, torque, especially low down, is a huge advantage of the TDI over, say, a petrol 1.6 which I have also driven on a test.

TDI Chris

Thanks for that ecodriving link. It's all common sense stuff which I generally adhere to. I used to be a driving instructor so I am used to trying to get the most out of a tank. Unfortunately it is my wife who drives the Golf most and she is not the smoothest driver. Even so it's going to take a 50% increae in economy to get me anywhere near 700 miles per tank.

What surprised me most is that when I first got the car I did drive it quite hard. So when I got 43mpg I kind of expected it. However, on the second tank of fuel I was much more careful and we even had a 100 mile run on the motorway at nice easy speeds. I got 44mpg out of that one. I did think the difference would be more than that.

I tend to agree that the type of driving you do has the biggest impact. Mine (my wifes) is mostly short runs and town driving. The engine rarely gets a chance to warm up.

Hi again,

I'm still getting 650+ miles to a full tank and with some fine weather and a few long runs i'm hoping to top 700 again before the summer is over.
Your on board computer is never as accurate as working out MPG manually so for the definative guide follow the below steps;

1. fill tank to the very top and reset trip clock to zero
2. drive carefully
3. run the tank close to empty (you can drive for about 50 miles once the fuel light comes on).
4. return to the same pump and fill up to the top again
5. make a note of your miles travelled
6. go to the below link and input your data.....

et voila

3 top tips....inflate tyres properly.....see if you can go a full journey without touching your brakes.....lock cruise control at 56mph on m/way.....if you do this your MPG will rocket....trust me.

post your full tank records when you try the above.

After running my 1.9 fr a few months I am getting to know how the economy is affected by the type of driving you do. Sometimes I will do nothing but short journeys round town for a couple of weeks and I will only get 450 miles on a tank. If I have some long runs on the Mway it's much better. I have found that you can do decent speeds (70 rather than 56mph) on fast roads without fuel consumption going up too much. If you are heavy on the gas pedal between roundabouts it will drop though. It's possible to get 600 miles to a tank but you hav to drive carefully on the right kind of roads.

I take your point totally, but i think the brake lights are essential for other drivers to see at times, you can't rely on other drivers slowing down and using engine braking like you do, IMHO

56mph? i'd have grown a full beard by the time i got to some jobs driving at that speed, 56mph in 5th in my 1.9tdi passat is about 1500 revs, out of the power and not in peak torque by 700 revs, i sit at 70mph where possible and get stupidly high mpg figures, when im doing 70ish miles an hour im doing 2500 revs in peak torque, engine is having to work less which means better mpg, 79.3mpg average over 133 miles of motorway driving in baking sunshine. i do agree that keeping tyres properly inflated helps and generally losing all the non essentials from your boot, no point having big tool boxes etc if you dont need them :biglaugh: i have a tow rope and halfords pro socket set in my boot, thats it.

I've got a a3 1.9tdi 105 and manage around 370 miles on a full tank. That is mainly town driving with a 2 mile commute each day on an express way, is it me or is that really poor? Because that would work out to be around 33-35mpg
