If you havent any rocker switches on the end of the wiper stalk then you dont have the trip computer. It wasn't a standard fit, it was an option.

You can retro-fit though if you want.

my audi also doesn't have this. Can you point me in the direction of how to retro fit the trip computer?

thanks

Which Audi are you talking about? Its sometimes just a case of fitting a new wiper stalk and encoding with VAG-COM.

Depends on the age and model of the car your talking about though.....

My car hasn't got this either, mine just displays the range left in the fuel tank.

I have a 2003 A4 2.5 TDi avant (8E chassis code).

sorry - yes it was a bit vague, "my audi"!!!!

2003 Audi A4 Avant TDI 130 engine code is AWX. I also see 8E in my chassis number.

it'd be cool if that's all it was - a new stalk and coding it in the VAG-COM.

/has fingers crossed

As long as you already have a miles to empty display then you just need a new wiper stalk, code it with VAG-COM. You may also need to ground one wire to turn off the low washer warning, or you could fit the sensor into the washer bottle.

There are a few threads where people have done this.

Another Dave,

I'm in the same boat as you with the lack of cruise/dis.

Would be good if you could let me know how you get on as I'm looking to get this added in the next couple of weeks.

Good luck installing and happy spannering!

yeah i will. I have an expensive month though so it might have to wait. Just realised my bike needs MOT'ing so i may as well have it serviced too. Plus i don't have VAG-COM yet.

Likewise, if you manage it before i do then let me know how you get on.

cheers

right guys, rang a few of the audi dealerships and they claim you need a new dash, which i think is rubbish. Dont really want to do this myself too many things can go wrong.

Tried the vag specialists as well but to no avail.

You just need a new wiper stalk, Post up a pic of your instrument if you need 100% confirmation.

I also have a 2003 A4 TDI which only had the fuel range left on the display. I simply got a new wiper stalk and a cruise control stalk and a new trim part for under the steering column, fitted them and recoded the adaption channel to activate the cruise and onboard computer. Works great. I fitted the cruise a few years ago and only did the computer last year. Wish I had known you could retrofit the computer stalk as it would have taken two minutes longer when I was doing the cruise stalk! I got the cruise control kit from Audi and the computer stalk from vagparts. Cruise is much cheaper from other sites now, cost me £110 from audi, the computer stalk was about £60 from vag parts, I also fitted the washer bottle level sensor while I was at it. You need the sensor and a wire for behind the dash. There are loads of articles about this on this forum and others, just put a search for retrofit DIS and cruise. Well worth doing.

Slightly off topic

Just been out in my A4 2.5TDI Avant quattro and noticed my cruise is not working. Pressing the button as usual does not light up the symbol on the instrument panel and it did not hold the speed, so it is not an indication problem. I have the DIS as well and that is working. No fuse listed on the fuse list and everything else seems to be working OK.

I had a new battery fitted yesterday and cant find anything in the handbook that tells me if anything associated with cruise needed resetting. Could just be coincidence.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

This may seem obvious and you have probably already tried it but you need to pull the cruise stalk forward past the first click before you press the button or else the cruise is switched off. Mine lives in the on position and i just press the end button as required. If you push the stalk right back it switches it off and pressing the button won't set it.

Yes I have pushed, pulled, switched it on and off. Thanks for the suggestion though.

unfortunately it would appear that vag parts are no longer trading.

i think that i have managed to track the DIS stalk down for my 2003 avant though.

is this right?

Hi,
I'm not sure what part numbers you would require regarding the cruise stalk or the new dis wiper stalk, I think it depends on chassis number and also what steering column electrics unit your car has. My car had the correct one that allowed the cruise stalk and dis to just be plugged in but I think that some cars have different units and you need to replace that too. Its just a unit fitted around the steering column and takes seconds to replace once the wheels off. If you put a search on this site for DIS AND CRUISE RETROFIT b6 and b7 by A8 tech, he has a very good write up on how to do it all, and also has part numbers for fitting the washer bottle sensor and gives all the coding for the vagcom once your done. Yes vagparts sadly have gone, But it might be worth asking your ******* for a price, tell them you want it on account but will pay cash, thats what I do and always get a decent price, but there are lots of other companies selling the stalks. I cant think of any right now, but I remember finding a few when I was fitting mine.

Hope this helps. Alan.

Just for information my cruise control is now working (see earlier post on this site). Fixed by Highland Audi. The problem was nothing to do with the new battery, but was a clutch pedal release switch.

I took it in to the Elgin branch, who could not have been more helpful. The diagnosis, part and fitting came to the grand total of £28 and the car had a wash.

Brilliant! One very happy customer.
