Ive got a 51 plate A4 TDI Sport 130, the rear nearside tyre has bad uneven tyre wear on the outer edge of the rear nearside tyre, picture attached. The outer edge is bald (as I am) and the inner edge probably had 3.5 mm or so.

Can anyone throw any light on the cause, the HPI shows no data of previous accident and alloys are totally un kerbed so dont think its been chucked around in a careless fashion previously.

Does the A4 have a camber/alignment adjustment on rear like some jap stuff?? http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9940/058.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=058.jpg)

Picture not available by the way. Not aware of any rear camber adjustment on non-quattro vehicles. Raise the rear of the car and hold the wheel at ten-to-two position (handbrake off). Check for play be rocking back and forth. Could be the wheel bearing needs adjusted or replaced. Also check for a leaking shock absorber/broken spring.

Are tyre pressures spot on too?

That's unusual. If you look at the tyres from the rear there is a good 1/2" of the outer tread that does not touch the road. Under load it will do but normally I find I get slightly more center wear on the rears! Something not right there. You'd have to have done some serious cornering to get that wear!!??

dunno what the answer is mate, will just take it to the local tyre place i suppose and see what they say, just hoping its not a bent axle or summint daft like that!

I asked something similar about my rear nearside which is wearing on the inside edge and was noted at the last service. Mind you, I'd done 20k miles and there is still tread visible.

The dealer offered the suggestion that it was a "problem" - and no suggestion of a solution, which I thought was a bit off given they had just had the car in for it's service.....surely there must be some form of reason....

They told me they can make minor adjustements on the rear of avant I have (1.9 tdi 130 sport) - but wouldn't say whether that would solve the problem.....grrr

Cheers,
Dan.

Ok after phoning many tyre specialist I have found the following:

The un even wear is due to the camber being set too toe in

Audi charge £110 to do a geometry test, the cost of any adjustments is extra (The words 'Go Get bent' spring to mind)

Indepenndant specialist said that all A4's have cams on the rear to adjust the camber, he quoted about an hour at £50 all inclusive to sort it including doing a 4 wheel lazer track, Now thats more like what im looking to pay !!!!!

That sounds much more like it! I'll be waiting a bit longer before getting mine done - MOT isn't until October - service probably around July time - and I can't help but feel that after 60k miles total I shall need new tyres by then anyway :)

Thanks for the v/useful info.

Cheers,
Dan.
