Hi Guys

Nice to meet you all.

I have searched previous posts but can't quite find what I'm looking for and need help.

The drivers window won't work, when operated makes a crunching type sound something is moving inside but not the window. I'm wondering if the glass has come out of the groove. I have removed the outer door card (after searching the forum for clues) The inner metal/aluminum door card I can't remove. How do you get this off, do you need to drill out the rivits? Any help greatly appreciated.

I'll then tackle the back doors later as one is permanentaly locked and won't open from inside or out and the other is intermitent.

Could the window issue be anything else.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
(The car is a late 2001 passat diesel estate if that helps)

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

I can't help with the window, that's beyond me, sorry. :( However as regards the rear doors 2 things spring to mind.

Have you checked your carpets on the passenger side? If they are wet, have a read of this (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=58157). It's a common 'issue' and causes all sorts of problems with the central locking.
Other thing it could be, is that the wires coming through the B pillar to the rear doors have a habit of breaking, causing the problem you've got.

It may be worth getting a fault code read, this may shed further light on the rear door problem.

The crunching sound is probably the mechanism trying to work. To get to it you will have to drill out the rivets. Your other problems could be individual faults ie check wireing or they could be a faulty comfort control model under passenger front seat. Beware wet carpets.

This just happened to mine when it froze up. New VW regulator - £80 plus fitting by friendly local independent - £40. No drilling of rivets required, it is a straight swap.

The crunching noise is the drive system cables which sounds as if they have badly frayed and then snapped (they do corrode)

You do have to de rivet the aluminium panel. All the window operating items mount on this but the cable, pulleys etc are on the back of the panel.

This item is replaced as a complete unit and from GSF is approx £80 but you will need to disassemble the door, remove window etc.

I had this done last year at a VW specialist and all in cost about £120. Roughly an hours work by someone who knows what they are doing.

Had this problem myself last year with the window not moving. I had to purchase the Aluminium door insert which comes complete with window mechanism attached. Cost me £86 for the insert.

You have to remove most of door parts and window glass, i found a step by step guide by searching with google. you only need to drill out the rivets holding the speaker as you will need to transfer this over to new insert.

took me about 1.5 hours do do complete job by following the guide. i will try and find link to this guide and post on here.

sorry cant help with rear doors.

hope it helps
