Gear indicator is flashing on Audi a4 B6

The gear indicator has just started flashing on my audi a4 b6 2.4 multitronic 2002.

The car is driving fine and it doesn't flash every time i use the car. The multitronic gear change on the steering wheel works fine as well. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Its in the the owners manual. it means a 'serious' fault has been detected by the gearbox control unit. Fault code read and cheque book at the ready.
