Morning all, I have a 99 B5 1.8 petrol auto and it is being a pain in the ar*e!

It will be driving along as normal and then will loose power, not go above 20 mph, sound like its going to cut out, you can rev the nuts of it but still wont go any faster and the woosh its off like a rocket!!

Not good as jittering on moment and flying the next :zx11: and then it will be fine for a couple of days, i cant seem to get a pattern with it.

Any advise would be most appreciated.

Have you had a fault code check done? (vagcom)

No, not yet, a mate of mine has the set up to do it but cant find the cable! Thought i look on here for pointers, just driven the car, seems very flat and has lost its go. :zx11:

I don't know too much about cars, but it could possibly be the MAF sensor? someone better clued up will be along soon I expect, rather than me just guessing.

If you mean the drive has lost power but the engine still revs ok then you must have an autobox fault. Sounds like a faulty valve in the autobox. Sometimes draining and refilling the box helps.

Yep, sounds like the box is slipping.
As martin said - there is also a filter on the box - worth replacing when you drain/refill.

Thanks guys, doesn't sound good! Would the car sound like it was going to stall when you come to a stop? And you look like a learner driver with a manual car as it jerks forward! Would vag-com confirm fault? This fault is not happening all the time, it was fine when weather was very cold but now it has warmed up its playing up again!!!

Many thanks

Vag-com should have faults logged. 1st thing to try.
Gearbox refill/box filter change is the cheapest attempt at a fix.
Might be as simple a a solenoid fault!

And yes - may well feel like it's about to stall, esp' if the box is locking up to the drive.

Thanks mate, is a gearbox oil and filter change a simple enough job?

Yep, if you can do an engine oil change. Have a search through the threads, i'd do it for you but now off to work lol.
