I've just had to call RAC out as my 98 passat1.8sport won't move. I just went to pull away from the kerb and moved about 2 foot there was agrinding noise and then it wouldn't move either in drive or reverse. Then when I put it back into park it makes a grinding noise.

RAC man said it sounds like torque converter or worse gearbox. Any ideas on cost to get this done by a gearbox specialist?

Hi

Mmmmmm :( Auto gearboxes are a very specilaist thing to repair, It may pay you to pick up a copy of Exchange and Mart, and see who advertises in there, for a recon unit.

The only Company I know off with a good reputation, OR at least they did when I lived in the area, is ATP (Automatic transmission products) in Cannock, in the West Midlands.

Hope this helps

Stuart

Thanks Stu. Just thought I'd let you know I got the work done just b4 Xmas. I needed a complete rebuild and at the same time a new driveshaft replaced. Total cost £1150!!.

Lot of money I know but the chap who done the job seemed really genuine and I will be taking it back in about a weeks time just to check for any oil leaks etc. I have to say the change up thru the gers is now silky smooth whereas before there always seemed to be a bit of a 'kick' between 2nd and 3rd. My car's done 120,000 miles and he reckons that was good for an auto gearbox although lots of cars can go on for even longer but it was a catch 22 situation. If I didn't have the work done then the car was virtually worthless so It's now got two year guarantee on the gearbox and with one daughter at uni and another at college then I think I'm gonna have to keep it for at least another two years before even thinking about going on to a b5.5!!

OUCH!!!! just the sort of bill you need before christmas :( glad your sorted now, pity it cost so much....

Not bad guarantee though, better than a recon unit from VAG, If I remember correct these only come with a 12month or 12000 miles warranty.
