EGR Removal - What, why and where???

Hi folks,

Just been reading a few old posts and keep coming accross this mystical item called an EGR.

Just a couple of queries;

1) What is an EGR
2)Why would you consider removing it?
3)Has anyone done an RR session to discover true BHP/Torque increase? If not then would anyone hazard a guess?

Its amazing how much my knowledge of b6's tdi 130's has improved since getting stuck in with this site, more to pick up yet tho methinks.
