hi people i'm new to this forum, I have a question, wonder if you can help me out

I bought a second hand polo 1996 (N reg) about 5 months ago, very happy with it, i was told it had been previously serviced 1 year ago, I have to get it serviced soon but I have no idea how much it'll cost me:confused: how much should i expect to pay for a complete service?

Also -- eversince a week ago i started hearing a rattling noise coming from the back of the polo, i was told this might be something to do with the exhaust? What might it be? has anyone experienced it before? what can be done to fix it?

thanks for your help (in advance:D )

Hi There,

First of all.... for a simple service,, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Oil you can get the parts for about £25 max plus the oil... (I would be able to get them for about £15 max trade, Where are you from? i may have a contact?)

If you are wanting the car serviced at a local garage you will be looking at £100 ish... You would be asking them what they will be doing... it could be anything from the above to changing the Brake fulid, pads and disc depending on life left, Fuel filter etc......

How many miles is on it?? Has the cam-belt been changed?

I would suggest going to a few local garages and getting a few quotes with a break down of parts.
Due to the age of the car i think you would not beneift from taking it to a VW dealer... If you are really wanting VW / VW Parts.. one option is to get the parts from VW and then find a garage prepared to do just the labour..

Let us know how you get on..

Rattling noise from back of polo occured on my old polo 16v and my present gti. Boyfriend fixed it. It was the exhaust mount that had come away and needed welding back to exhaust. Common problem. Its located (under car obviously) where rear seat base is, roughly. They dont always appear broken but do give rattling sound. The front one is also common for breaking away just behind gear box. Welding should cost a small local garage no more than 15 quid. Dont let them sell you a new exhaust for this prob unless you hearan exhaust blow too.

As for service..providing its a petrol car, a full sevice which would include changing engine oil, gear box oil, and every filter on the car, and inc spark plugs, and cleaning and adjusting rear brakes should cost in region of 120-150 depending on where you go. Obviously if cam belt is due this could cost quite a bit more. I'd reccommend as you have just bought the car, and if you dont know the history, you should change the cam belt anyway as the cost of doing this is a lot cheaper than a new engine or cylinder head re-build!
Hope this helps!

thanks for the quick response rick, josey

i live in london, going to ask around a few garages for servicing costs, about the exhaust, so you think there's no need for a new one? less strain on my pockets then:Blush:

it's the 1996 model (N reg) it has 74000 miles on the clock, i don't know about the cam belt, since owning it i took it to brighton and dover with no problems, i'm quite happy with it

thanks for the advice

hi

Your welcome. Actually its my boyfriend that gave the advise! I just typed it!! I would check out the cam belt though, if you are doing lots of miles and you dont know when it was last changed. Better to be safe then sorry. I've seen my fellas brother wreck 3 cars from them not taking this advice!! 2 Alfa's and a Citroen- say no more! You'd think he'd learn! Still you know your circumstances, and after all, this is just a forum, so its not gospil. ;)

also i think i should get my wheels aligned because when i'm driving if i let go of the steering wheel for a second the car pulls to the lef t, i was told most cars do that but mine pulls quite abit, any suggestions?

thanks:cool:

hopeful your trackrod ends wont of seized up... other wise these may need replacing..

One thing i did on my old motor before taking it in, was to lube the trackrod ends the day before to ensure it had chance to work and free them.... Other wise you tend to get a guy with a large spanner and then crack..!! the heads come off!!

How many miles is on it?? Has the cam-belt been changed?Hi folks

Just bought a 1996 1.4 CL Polo for my daughter, 98,000 miles on the clock. I obviously thought it was in good nick (or I wouldn't have bought it) but there is no service history. So I figure a cam-belt change is prudent.

The local VW dealer quoted £410 yesterday which I figure is outrageous - my V6 Honda is £350 and that includes a major service. I found a place on the web quoting £96. Question - what is a reasonable rate? Is it a DIY option (I do not claim to be particularly mechanically gifted, but am happy to take on much routine servicing like Oil, plugs, air & pollen filters etc.) or are multiple specialist tools required?

And what does the "IN 01" indicator on the dash mean, please? (Apart from no service history it also has no manual!) I found a web-page that tells me how to reset it, but is there any intelligence behind its appearance?

"IN 01" This appears to inform you that a service is due. I'd also say £96 for the cam-belt change is a fair price. M

i would say you would be looking at £50 ish for a cambelt kit for that car.. and then about £100 max for the cambelt..

IN01... service due in 1000 miles... (this service light can be reset, do a search on Google and im sure you will find something.)

Where abouts are you from, i may know some contacts for parts or labour

(PS.. if you are not 100% sure how to do it... dont even think about it... a few teeth out and it could be new valves etc...

Cheers for the replies.
i would say you would be looking at £50 ish for a cambelt kit for that car.. and then about £100 max for the cambelt..I have been researching a bit more and reckon DIY is beyond me. But I am confused - cambelt kits, cambelt, tensioner & water pump. The Dealer was clear their price included belt & tensioner. What else is in a kit? And are VWs also of the 'reliability' that it is best to swap the water pump while you are t it?

I am in Reading.

Hey KIKO, i have also a N reg Polo 74000 miles and have no idea where to take it for the service, any suggestions?

Also open question desperatly needing advice, i have been told one of my AMG alloys is rotten (tyre had gone completely flat), is it worth replacing all 4 wheels? or recondition my alloys and keep my tyres which are in good condition, firestone tyres. Does anyone know any good Alloy recon places round Kingston/Richmond area?

Also the revs on the car keep dropping and the car cuts out even when i have my foot right down on the clutch???

Kiko mentioned you get rattling from the rear i get a knocking from under the footwell of the drivers side, behind the clutch? happens when the car has been driving for a long time in hot weather.

Other than that love the car - Any suggestions? really could do with some advice.

hi lie

i live in northwest london, i went around local garages asking for quotes and list of parts with previous much needed advice from Rick and Josey (a few posts up) my best quote was £99 for the service.

I think your gearbox might be gone, i'm not sure, ask Rick or Josey they give good advice, if it's the gearbox you can pick a decent one from a scrap yard, one of my alloys busted, they had a huge selection of them

once again ask Rick or Josie or Josie's bf they know what they're talking about:Blush:

...i love that little wheel fitted cardboard box as well it's older than the queen but it's been really reliable, took it from london to heathrow, dover, lydd, salisbury and it still asks 4more:Blush:

good luck lie
