A recent survey revealed that Volkswagen’s BlueMotion environmental label is one of the most widely recognised in the UK*. Today, Volkswagen’s Research and Development department is presenting a package of BlueMotion Technologies, demonstrating and summarising Volkswagen’s best environmental technologies of today which will fulfil the automotive aspirations of tomorrow. These include developments such as a new Stop-Start system, regenerative braking, electric drives and hybrid systems.
(* Survey by Fleet News, October 2008)

Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid:

Volkswagen is set to present a prototype of the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid (333 PS / over 31 mpg). With one of the highest performance parallel hybrid systems in the world, this SUV uses a high-tech combination of a 333 PS V6 TSI boosted by a supercharger and an electric motor (51 PS). At speeds of under 50 km/h (31 mph), the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid is powered but the electric motor alone and with zero emissions. This car is set to go into production in 2010 and will also be the world’s first hybrid SUV to have 3.5 metric ton towing capacity.

Passat BlueMotion 2:

A 2.0-litre 110 PS common rail TDI engine offers economy of 57.6 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 128 g/km while its range of 870 miles means Land’s End to John O’Groats on a single tank of fuel. The Passat BlueMotion 2 has a Stop-Start system and conforms to limits of the Euro V emissions standard. As with all BlueMotion models, the Passat saloon and Estate retain all their practical attributes while still being conventional to drive and maintain. The Passat BlueMotion 2 is on sale in the UK now, priced at £17,327 for the saloon (£18,438 Estate).

Passat BlueTDI:

This 143 PS (105 kW) diesel engine is ahead of its time as the first TDI to conform to Euro VI emissions standard that does not take effect until 2014. The Passat BlueTDI has a SCR catalytic converter which reduces nitrogen oxides to less than 80 mg/km. Fuel economy of the saloon with a manual six-speed gearbox is 54.3 mpg (CO2 137 g/km); the Passat BlueTDI is also available in Estate bodystyle as well as with a six-speed DSG gearbox.

Passat TSI EcoFuel:

Until now, one of the drawbacks of cars powered by natural gas was that their performance could be rather unexciting. A world first for Volkswagen, the Passat TSI EcoFuel uses a turbocharged and supercharged direct injection engine configured for natural gas operation. With 150 PS, this Passat combines a top speed of 130 mph and a zero to 62 mph time of just 9.7 seconds with excellent fuel economy of just 4.4 kilograms of natural gas (approx € 4.25 in Germany) per 100 km. Thanks to a seven-speed DSG gearbox, the Passat achieves 120 g/km of CO2 (six-speed manual 4.5 kg/100 km and 123 g/km CO2). Should the natural gas supply on board run low, the Passat can be switched to run on petrol, giving a total range of around 560 miles.
