Mk3 Golf TDI (1996) - Stolen keys

I've recently had my keys stolen (and I wish they had taken the car too...). I have had a lot of trouble with VW as they charged me to have the key copied (from Germany) and when I went to collect it, it was just a blank key (Muppets!). VW have no record of this car as it is a 1996. A lot of toing and froing and still nowhere. Can anybody suggest a cheap resolution to this which doesn't involve VW at all - they're looking at charging me over £300...the car's worth about £500....and as there's a credit crunch...

if the keys for the car are the same ie igniition and door locks
remove the door handle on some cars the key no was embosed on the handle
4 digits ie 4123 1567
the only thing it wont give you is the profile but if your blank goes into barrel all the way it should be the one
if this is no good get a second hand lock set the only thing you may need then is 4 digit immobillizer code
