80 Avant 2.6e issues

Hi Folks,

I have recently bought a 80 2.6 as a temp work horse and i have experienced a couple of problems one being there seems to be a bit of belt screech at idle but goes away when running and also when i blip the revs very slightly the car will near cut out, revs are a little eratic this happening over last two days. whilst running if i give it beans there seems to be almost a bit of hesitency at the lower revs.
Has anyone got any idea's as to what could be wrong?

One possibility for the 'bit of belt screech at idle' may be the alternator belt tension being too slack? Usually more noticeable at the point when you drive off and increase the revs. The reason being that the alternator is trying to charge the battery - for example, heated rear window or lights etc are on and the force required to turn the alternator pulley increases with the level of charging it requires to do.- if the belt slips, it will screech.

It settles down when the speeds of the belt and pulley match each other.
