It really is one of those rare moments, stepping into your new car for the first time, the choosing, saving, waiting...having your number barred by the dealership because you won't stop calling them, all over and finished.
Poop! Poop!

Congratulations.

Ohhh - they'll not help you. I've givne them strict instructions that they can only sail the boat during daylight hours, on mill-pond calm waters, at a maximum Beaufort windscale force 1, and with a Royal Naval escort on the bow and stern, and on port and starboard.

Do you still think it'll make it OK? ;) :D

Thanks, it's like all my xmases and b.days all at once - and I've bought quite a few brand new cars, but this really is giving me the butterflies!

Even my new S4 didn't get me quite like this! I suppose the S4 was only a stop-gap car, though I never told Mrs Tamer that! ;) I've actually longed for an RS4 for about 5 or 6 years, from seeing the B5 RS4s, but the estates don't really do it for me!

Aye, the painful bit is the paying, though!

having your number barred by the dealership because you won't stop calling them, all over and finished.

LOL, I don't actually hassle them, just gave them my exact spec, had a real good banter whilst thrashing out a good deal, and then just letting them get on with it.

Congratulations.

Well, can that bit actually wait 'till I get the hallowed keys in my grubby mits? ;) :D

A Rs4 Umm Yer not bad i suppose.

Well, what's better then? An M3, hmm, no thanks, even my S4 can run rings around them. Or an M5 - with that awful SMG box, and only rear wheel drive, which can not get all the horses on the black stuff. What about an MB C55AMG - same probs as the Bimmers, can't get the power down. A porker 911, yes, lush, but only 2 useable seats, so no good.

I really don't think you could find another 4 door, 5 seater car which comes anywhere near the RS4. Even the new S6 isn't a match, the slush box is awful, and the handling is more suited to A-bahns, rather than twisties - oh, but the V10 is swear-wordly incredible! :D

Err no, ours is a very high spec road going car.

Not even sure that it was an M5, could not even say for sure it had a BMW engine, but I can say in a straight line there was very little that could touch it that day :p

PS I believe the owner drove it to York Raceway.

I think there's no better car in that price range than the RS4. It's got everything, power, space, its comfortable, driveble in the city, great out in the country side, you can park it, its not overly flashy, its one of the quicket cars on the streets...

Its got a lot going for it really..and they sound BEAUTIFUL..

Apparently if you bought it in manual..you can also operate it in 'automatic'..Start car..put in 4th...and leave it in 4th..and its still QUICK

Now thats a powerful car...

Sadly, no thanks. Anyone can get a car to go fast in a straight line! It's corners that interest me, and the 'pod doesn't seem to have many of them! ;)

If you want to take it to Donington, Pau, Le Mans (the full circuit!), or even the 'ring . . . . that carrot is dangling . . . :D

Oh yusssss, especially when the "S" button is pressed :firedevil

Apparently if you bought it in manual..you can also operate it in 'automatic'..Start car..put in 4th...and leave it in 4th..and its still QUICK

Huh . . . they only do the RS4 in manual! I think what you are trying to say, is that you can use, or rely on the torque of the engine. My S4 is like that - find a clear bit of road, stick it in sixth gear, foot off the gas, let it crawl along, the speedo will drop to 20 mph merrily floating along on tickover without any driveline shunt - then press the gas pedal, and it will pull like a train all the way to an indicated 170 mph on the clock - nice! :D

Now thats a powerful car...

It's actually the torque that does that! ;) :nana:

Teutonic_Tamer
07-03-2007, 03:24 PM
I Agree , Other than the high cost of ownership, as with all super saloons of today, the Rs4 has got to be one of the best all round cars money can buy.

But funnily enough, apart from the initial purchase price, it won't be any more expensive than my S4. ;)

Same insurance group, same fuel economy, same VED.

Servicing should be the same, boots might be a touch more expensive, but should last a touch longer due to the RS4 being lighter . . .

Anything else I've missed . . . ?

I lot of what a car can or can not do is very much down to the driver,

Oh, I fully agree - but only up to a point. You cannot overcome the laws of physics (as all the owners manuals seem to quote next to the ESP sections). There is a clear and finite level of grip from any given tyre - channel that through two tyres, and the limit will be reached much earlier than with 4.

Even the Stig gets it wrong - remember the big off he had in the Koenigsegg, and few would be foolish enough to doubt his abilities.

yes the Rs 4 is a very capable car, and no one with any sense will dispute that.

:bigok:

And as for seeing me in your mirrors, i dont think i would still be close enough to you for you to still see me at all, wouildn`t be the same case in the dry though trust me ;)

Hmm, not sure on that.

On my last track day, amongst others, we had a fully race prepared M3, two standard M3s, 2 race preped Lotus Elises/Exiges, Caterhams, 4 or 5 Scoobs, 2 Evos, some Merc coupe with an AMG V8 under the bonnet, oh, and a new RS4. When it rained, the RS4 and my S4 were completely untouchable, and I took great joy in seeing the race M3 losing it on every bend. On a couple of the sessions, we actually agreed to take turns following each others lines, looking for grip, and power-on points. The M3 chap just couldn't match my traction, and would wave me through, and I would pick him off on the outside, on a very high speed hairpin, him loosing the back end, me driving hard round the outside . . .

Even when fully dry the M3 was no real match - OK, he would gain on me slightly down the straights, but high speed bends, he would lose on traction, and exiting low speed chicanes he worked so hard, he actually held me up! He had been a lifelong Bimmer fan, and had poured shed loads into his M3, but he agreed that the S4 quattro, in the right pair of hands, was untouchable in the wet.

At the end of the day, though, my S4 and RS4 are straight out of the box, with absolutely no modifications. I take it your M5 wouldn't be described in quite the same light! ;)
