I have a 1997 VW Jetta, 4 cyl. with approx. 124,000 miles. Since the weather has been cold here lately, it seems like the car has trouble staying in 1st gear after I start it up. Once I get going and everything is warm, it seems OK.

I asked my mechanic (who is not a VW mechanic) about getting a tranny fluid flush and fill) he did some searching and said it would take 10-12 qts. of fluid at $18 per qt (special volkswagen ATF) .... a $79 filter..... and $140 in labor. Does that sound even remotely correct?

I called the autoparts store to see what they said and they came back with about 6 qts of either valvoline or castrol ATF (about $5 per qt.)..... and a $20 filter.

I really need to know if I have to use this really expensive fluid or if there are better deals out there. The car only cost me about $3000 and I don't know if I want to invest anywhere from $500-$1000 in a tranny fluid flush/fill.

Thanks for any advice.
