Hi I Need Would be grateful for help with two problems. I have an Octavia 1.9 TDi 2004. It has developed an intermittent metallic rattle and vibration at idle which disappears when the engine speeds up. It appears to be coming from inside the crankcase. It is otherwise running normally. The other is the fan coming on when the car is sitting. I understand it may be the temp sensor but I cannot find it despite reading the earlier descriptions Any advice would be much appreciated. Regards NKG

listen for the noise around the bellhousing this could be your dual mass flywheel?
the fan fault? temp sender for the fan in radiator or in bottom hose?

Take off the aux belt, common one is the 35BG05S16G2DL 35x55x20mm Air Conditioner Bearing failing, also the aux belt tensioner bearing. Run it without the aux belt for a moment, see if the rattle is gone. Failing that, cambelt kit or dual mass flywheel, or gearbox in that order in my experience.

Greg.
