anybody know which engine oil for golf mk5 1.9tdi 2007 plate

Yes, you need an 5w-30 oil which has a VW spec of 507.00.
I use Castrol Edge 5W-30.

Sorry to hijack but I was wondering the same thing so I can get some for 'top up'. Can anyone tel me what I should be buying for a MK5 1.6 petrol ?

The spec for a Golf petrol is 504.00. Castrol Edge 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00, so it is suitable for petrol and diesel.

All the other oil manufacturers do the 504.00/507.00 so you can shop around.
