Golf Mk5 2.0 GT TDi "Exhaust Emissions" light on

I am new to the site, so here goes.
I have a Golf with the problem detailed in the title, local garage have looked at it but failed to fix. Any ideas anyone? I hear the EGR may be the problem. Car is out of warranty

1st thing is get it read for faults.

that emmisions workshop light could be several things.

I have had problem two times. First it was shortcut in intake manifold flap motor.

Second time EGR valve was not working. film/foil inside the valve was ripped.

If its the 170hp car it could well be the DPF
