Hello all,

I'm the new owner of a 96 Passat TDI.
It seems like a great car but there are a few things that don't work.
I'm pretty handy and was looking a little advice.
The knob to change the vents to defrost, floor, ect is stuck.
the speedometer and tachometer both just stopped working.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I recently bought a 1995 Passat TDi too and it's been fitted with a new instrument panel. From searching this forum and other places it appears that it's quite a common thing to go wrong.

They have problem with the printed circuit behind the instruments. The wiring connector socket joints on the PCB dry out. I`ve resoldered quite a few after VW quoted telephone number prices for new ones. If you try a second hand one, the odds are that it will have the same problem as the scrappies don`t care how they disconnect them and by so doing damage the joints.

I just bought this car from my uncle.
I noticed that the fuel and temp guages don't work either.
My uncle said the issue started about the same time as he had an issue with the ignition switch not wanting to turn.
Could this be an ignition switch issue causing the guages no to work?
all the lights and digital displays work fine.

Thank you all for our attention and input.
