Brighter headlights

I've recently bought a 2006 Jetta 2.0 TDI Sport which has ordinary halogen lights. I am finding the headlights a bit dim.

Has anyone tried Philips Xtreme or Osram Nightbreakers or similar and, if so, have they improved matters? I'm not looking for boy-racer 'blues', just more lights.

Oh, one other thing: if I do replace the bulbs, how many do I need (is it 2 or 4)?
