ashtray flip door issue

regarding a recently purchased A4 B7: the ashtray flip door forward of the stickshift will not flip back into the console leaving me limited access to the 12v supply for the radar detector (mandatory equipment). any suggestions to carefully explore this area and restore the function of the door without becoming destructive? TIA

I have this problem with my 04 A6. It have to pull it out as opposed to it popping out.
