Just wanted to see if any of you have solved the problem with the fuel emission light coming on and off in Polo. I have tried quite a few things over the past 2 yrs and its still coming on and off. sensors have been changed, new ignition coils fitted and soultion has been added to fuel tank, but to no avail. Both Vw garage and independent mechanic are at a loss.
I have noticed recently however that the light goes out when the guage on the fuel tank falls below half but then comes on just before the first red line. Does anyone think this might be significant. I would really like to solve this problem once and for all. Any suggestions would be grateful.

Thanks for that. it is a 1.2v engine and I bought it new in February 2004, does this mean it has abby enginge and if so what would you suggest needs looked at?

you need to check the engine no
you will find this in the front cover of the service book or if you give a dealer a ring they will be able to tell you and if the update has been done

hi, just saw your message and thought i would let you know i had a very similar problem. Again i had loads of sensors, coild, etc changed - all of which did not work. My car i am now pleased to say is fixed and it was a wiring problem which kept knocking all the sensors out causing the epc and engine management light to come on. This was solved by an auto electrician so think it will definatley be worth looking into it.

Just wanted to ask if anybody knows about wiring in ECU. Had a new mechanic look at car and he seems to think that its due to wrong wiring affecting cooling sysytem. Does anyone have any visuals as to wires involved and where they would be in engine.http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon5.gif

Is this is a VW specialist or VW dealer you've been taking the car to, and have you seen the fault code reports from the ECU? Some garages have only very basic diagnostic tools that may give only vague pointers, but any decent specialist should have computer gear able to get very specific fault reports from the car, and go from there.

There's no single answer to the emissions light - it could any number of faults - but good diagnostic gear (and a mechanic with VW experience) should be able to pin it down fairly accurately. Don't put up with the "we'll try replacing x, then y, then z" approach that will just add up to a lot of unnecessary expense.

BTW - you can find out your engine code from the sticker in the boot near the spare tyre - just lift up the carpet tray. It'll be a three letter code, might be BBY or AZQ or something else entirely. I know our 2002 ECU (on our AZQ engined car) has had at least one update covering this kind of thing. We've nevertheless had the light come on three times since September, but each was for a specific fault identified by the computer - a blown cat, a faulty EGR valve, and finally a gunked up pipe feeding the EGR valve. The first two were a bit expensive, the third was literally a two minute cleaning job that the mechanic did in front of us without charge.

Thanks for that, checked engine code its a AWY. The car emmission light has been going on and off for a few years, throttle pump has been changed new map sensors, ignition coils , soultion added to petrol etc.,. They all seem to work and the light goes out for a while but comes on again. The latest reading on the diagnostic tool has defined a ect sensor fault.

Well ECT = Engine Coolant Temp, so maybe your latest mechanic is on to something - I have read about a manufacturing fault on some of these sensors themselves though - do you know if it's ever been replaced before? AFAIK it's quite a cheap part.

On our car we had this sensor disconnected at one point while the mechanic was trying to diagnose a separate fault, and sure enough the emissions light was on the whole time as a result.

As far as I know it has never been changed, just hope this works. Will keep you posted.
