Hi Guys,

As I mentioned in a previous thread I am currently having problems with my 2.4 Multitronic. The problems I am having is when cold there is a very loud creaking noise coming from the front of the car when turning. I am also getting shuddering from the engine at 1900rpm.

As I only bought the car 2 weeks ago I took it back to the garage last friday to be checked out and well I'm not very convinced with what they told me.

First off they told me that the creaking was down to dried out lubricant which they "sorted". This is obviously not the case because as soon as I got the car back yesterday it was creaking again. This is now in dispute with the garage.

Secondly they told me they contacted an audi technican about the shuddering and that he informed them it was normal! The shuddering is now getting worse and is now noticable at 1300-1400 and 1900-2000rpm.

Now im sure the garage is trying to pull a fast one, even though its under warranty so its leading me to beleive there is a bigger problem that they don't want to fix.

Im starting to get the feeling that the gearbox is the problem, going by the symptoms that people in other threads have described.

Any ideas guys as it looks like im going to need some decent knowledge to argue this out with the garage

Thanks
Matt

I never had problems with my Multitronic that gave shuddering at higher revs - just when pulling away, and not between gears which I guess you are seeing?

Get the dealer to cough for a proper diagnostic at an Audi centre I would suggest....

Cheers,
Dan.

it only seems to shudder when it passes through those rev ranges, no problems in gear changes. It is also a little slow to pull away but there is no shuddering until it meets those revs.

I have also noticed that it sometimes holds the revs at around 1100 rpm when coming to a stop then suddenly releases to idle speed just before completely stopping. this also causes the revs to dip and rise but it only happens now and again.

Its going back in on tuesday for a second look. If they give me the same rubbish excuse as before I will most likely back out of the deal.

Would be a shame as apart from the problems its an excellent car.

Is this all happening when your car is still cold.Mine also pulls away slowly when the temperature is under 2 degrees, but I'm just guessing that the gearbox is selecting 2nd gear in case of icy surfaces, and acts very sluggish. After 3-5 minutes everything is ok.

Yeah its quite sluggish when its cold but gets better as it warms up. Its usually slow pulling away all the time but im under the impression thats normal for a CVT. Its strange because as it warms up it stops being sluggish but the shuddering through the revs gets stronger.

I'm not a car tech, but the sluggish pull away when cold might be a separate issue from the engine shudder.Good luck with the garage.

well i may have spoke to soon about my gear box being fine............ at 1500 rpm the rev meter seems to give a slight push and the rev meter goes up by 200-300 rpm then goes back to normall and this is constant at around 1500rpm no shuddering between gears though.... now is this normal???

I have also noticed this "that it sometimes holds the revs at around 1100 rpm when coming to a stop then suddenly releases to idle speed just before completely stopping. this also causes the revs to dip and rise but it only happens now and again".

TulleyAGS how did you solve yours am i being picky or is this something to look at, ive got a service coming up in the next week cars done 39000 miles

Hello TullyAGS,

You have mentioned:

"The shuddering is now getting worse and is now noticable at 1300-1400 and 1900-2000rpm".

Im having the exact same problem whenever i change into gears.
The cause of the problem is your gearbox mount. I went to a Audi specialist and they informed that the gearbox mount needs replacing.
My car is going is going on Monday to get it replaced.

The rpice they are charging me is around £80 including labour.

I am 100% sure that it is the gearbox mount.

Hi guys,

As yet none of my problems have been resolved. Its in again on thursday and I have been assured they will find the real source of the problem. Im not holding my breath though!

Since I made this thread I would say the car has got quite a lot worse. It now struggels in reverse and I have heard some disturbing clonks and whines.

Mr Meeks, your gearbox should be having the oil changed when it is serviced as it is due every 40k. I would wait and see how it drives after the service. I haven't had a problem like that but it may be worth asking about it when you take it in.

Zeb, I can see how a gearbox mount could cause the shudder but mine is shuddering all the time. If I put it into semi auto and hold the revs it will shudder but if i change up or down it will change smoothly. It is the same in auto and it is also the same in park and neutral if i rev it.

I have had the inverted PRND display which means a gearbox control unit problem has been detected. I also did a search and found a story on the A6 forum which is exactly the same as mine and it resulted in a new gearbox.

As soon as I get the verdict I will let you know but I am quite sure its a major problem.

Cheers
Matt
