Caps and screaming are a bit excessive for such a minor issue.
Anyway, the GLI name tended to be used for a 1.6 and GTI for a 1.8 and the 1.8 didn’t come along until 1982 model year. The button on the dash is for changing the MFA (Multifunction Antriebe) or trip computer setting from 1 (instantaneous) to 2 (average) and for resetting, by pulling it out. These were only fitted to a 1.8. What is the chassis year letter, wvwzzz15z ? Kxxxxxx)

Any pics?
The GLi was produced before VW did a GTi Cabby. It had the 1.6 injection engine. GL cabbys had a 1500 til 83 and then went to 1600 carb.....I think:o
