I've got a 2004 1.9 TDI SE and today it developed a problem. Basically I drove it for 15 miles (from cold) and I noticed that the temperature gauge was showing a temperature of nearly 100 degrees! Also it was at this point I realised that the heating was only blowing cold air into the cabin. I turned around to come home and a coolant temperature warning message came up in the bit where the trip computer read out is and I started geting a faint smell of burning! Got it parked up at home now and I'm gonna get it to a garage in the week but I just wondered if anyone knew what might be up?

hi,
i have had this problem before (not on my audi)and it turned out to be the thermostat in the radiator that was faulty.i'm sure someone on this forum with some technical knowledge will be able to confirm or dismiss my suggestion.

sounds like you have a coolant leak or a bad air lock
when the heaters are blowing cold it is cause theres no water in the matrix

the burnig smell could be the engine because it got so hot

top up the water and see if you can spot a leak?
really when you car overheats you should stop and let it cool down and check there is water

Just wanted to come back and finish of the story of the over heating. Appantently it was a knackered water pump. Common problem on the A4 B6 apparently. I was told I should have had it replaced when the cam belt was changed.

My 2002 A4 1.8T has exactly the same symptoms. Driving home from work on Wednesday I noticed that the heater was only blowing cold air then the temp gauge went past the usual 90 degree mark and I pulled over. I expected to find no water in the reservoir but it was between the min/max mark. Having tested the car this afternoon it over heats if the heater is off, when I turn it on (and get a blast of cold air rather than hot) the temp comes down slightly. Is this likely to be a faulty water pump then? There was no signs of "Mayo" when I checked the Oil so hopefully not the dreaded head gasket fault I have been warned of.

Another quick update. The water pump was replaced but then they found out that the thermostat needed changing too. However whilst that seems to have cured the overheaing it is still blowing out cold air. So far the car's been with Audi for 3 days! A small upside is that they've given me an A4 (B8) as a loan car!

Hey! I'm in Leicester. Do you mean you just stopped drivng it? I'm in the lucky situation that my company is gonna pay for the work on the car so I guess it's a case of how fed up they get - there's a chance they might try and dispose of it. If you find your self at a car auction in the next couple of months and come across a Silver 54 plate Audi with about 104,000 miles on it - make sure get the bloke driving it through the auction to blast the heating! If you just get an icy blast then walk on by! :biglaugh: Shame though cos with a 100k on the clock it just feels nicely run in...

having similar problem with my 2004 18.t overheats when i'm doing 70-80 mph but heater will blow red hot heat when turned up to max to lose heat,
seems to hold 90o at low speeds what would you expect to pay for a new water pump fitted at a dealer and a independent garage

I've had the fault on my A4 1.8T identified as a dodgy water pump. I'm getting this and the cam belt (might as well have it done at the same time) done at an independant Audi specialist for £350 inclusive. Hope this info helps someone.

Whilst you have all the front off and the water pump out yuou might as well replace the belts and tensioners. Get it done by a reputable lot otherwise you run the risk of having the belt fitted under-tensioned. Also make sure they fit a pump with a meatl impellor.

Dealers charge alot but Stafford Audi are very reasonable- for some reason.......An inde is your next choice.:outtahere
