Hi There,

sorry if this has already been talked about but I had a quick search to see but couldn't find anything!

My old girl just seems to rev high intermitently for approx 5 seconds up to about 4,000 rpm and then returns to normal running but then looses all power for approx 5 seconds.

Very annoying and also dangerous at junctions.

She's done 165,000 now but still very quiet and easy starting.

I have owned the old girl for the past 6 years now and really has been the best motor I've owned. Unfortunatley she's starting to look her age but I'm really reluctant to let her go.

Any ideas on how to save her???

Regards,
Stuart

This is only something to look at.
On the top of the fuel injection pump there are four
bolts holding an aluminium type cover. One of these bolts
is triangular shaped (tamperproof) Have a look and see if there
is any signs that it may have been tampered with.
If the cover has been moved it could cause problems like you
describe and if so best bet would be to visit diesel specialist

I also remember reading that engines can run on engine lub oil
that can be due to overfilling or faulty turbo seals. I think??

How long is problem in car?

its got to be getting too much fuel or running on its own oil to do this. has it been using any engine oil? does it actually just rev up on its own? i.e engine is at tickover and then revs go up.if as micheal suggests, its a turbo seal, this could be catastrophic. if it revs out of control, you will need to be ready to put it into gear <3rd should do it> and dump the clutch, whilst standing on the footbrake, to stall the engine, or it may rev out of control until something breaks. incidentally, a diesel will run on anything that will burn. engine oil, veg oil, coaldust, peanuts etc.

Thanks for the replies lads,

I know for a fact that the pump hasn't been tampered with and she's only started the intermitent fault about 3,000 mls ago, or there abouts :Blush2:

She doesn't acually high rev without your initial first plip of the throttle and then she takes over and has a mind of her own. I know what you mean about the pedal shuffle, I got quite used to that :D

Your theory on running on oil had crossed my mind but I've had an old knackered ford diesel rev before and that puffed out smoke like a grenade attack!!

But the old 80 doesn't smoke when the fault appears????

Is the turbo seals a common fault and would this smoke?

What they like to replace?

Stuart.

The turbo is not a troublesome item
It is possible to replace but awkward and takes few hours
I expect if it was oil related problem it would emit smoke.
Maybe you could get fault codes read in case of fault being elsewhere like throttle unit. either the unit at the pedal or the
electronic unit on the pump. The unit on the pump does give
trouble normally in the form of juddering at about 1500 revs
If you can make problem happen you could find out if the fault
can be found by using laptop diagnostic check when driving
Also try contacting good diesel specialist who may have come across same problem in the past There are some good ones
back in the posts if you have time to check about 270 posts
on juddering jerking
