Hi to all, I recently bought a 2001 2.0 Passat estae and today the engine light came on, hasn't affected the cars performance at all after some 50 miles.
Is it likely to be the lambda sensor?
(In the past it always has been for me)
cheers

You need to get it fault code read, that engine is prone to breather pipe failure which causes lambda sensor errors. Get a code read done and post the result.

Thanks for that quick response, but first I will check the pipes as I know there is a loose pipe hanging about near the airbox, haven't had a chance to remove the box to see where it should be.

Had a quick look myself and there is a hose about 25mm diameter that probably should go to the airbox, but there is no connection for it. This hose comes from a circular thing under the front crossmember which has a hose that goes to a EGR valve or similar!?

If anyone knows what this is...please tell me.

Will book into the local garage to have the light checked soon.

That sounds like it is the secondary air injection pump hose which comes from the air cleaner to the pump and then back to the SAI valve on the head. If that system is not working, it will bring on the check light.

Thanks for that info, what does that part do and where should the hose go to?

I think there has been some accident damage to the drivers front and the airbox looks slightly modified or different, there is nowhere for that hose to go, could I drill a hole and connect it to the airbox?

Two pics taken in the dark!
One shows the top of ther airbox with the loose pipe, also the ally covered pipe which also goes to this component next to the air con receiver.
Second pic taken from down in the engine compartment looking from the engine to underneath the offside front wing.

cheers

The secondary air pump on an AZM engine should pick up from the air box so I suspect you have the wrong air box. Unfortunately the pictures are too small to see all around the air box, have you tried joining http://photobucket.com (http://photobucket.com/) or http://www.flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com/) ? These would help you post very good pictures.

There isn't a connection for the hose, I've taken off the airbox to see, could I drill a hole and fit the hose in after the filter?

That is only the intake for the hose to make sure the air is filtered, you still need a code read.

The garage read the code today and found a leaking vacuum hose/pipe which they replaced, been out tonight for about 40 miles and light still off.
Booked in for a cambelt change next week as there is no history with the car so don't know when it was done.
